Argylle helmer Matthew Vaughn teases plans to stretch the upcoming spy title starring Henry Cavill and Bryce Dallas Howard into a film trilogy based on new books connected to the franchise.
Speaking with GamesRadar, Vaughn revealed there will be two movies based on Cavill’s eponymous agent in Argylle after the upcoming movie, which will be more focused on Howard’s spy novelist character, Elly Conway. The Argylle sequel will be based on the first of the upcoming books penned by the real-life Conway, which hits shelves on Jan. 9, while the threequel involves details Vaughn isn’t ready to divulge yet. “Book one is about: how did Argylle become a spy? That will be the next film. And then Argylle 2 is – I don’t want to give it all away, but there’s the young Argylle, and that becomes Henry, because Henry loves the idea of doing a proper Argylle movie as well,” he said.

Last October, Vaughn confirmed Argylle would be based on a series of yet-to-be-released books, with the upcoming first installment based on a fourth book that will drop much later than the first. Argylle has long been planned to become a major multimedia franchise, with the first film seeing less of Cavill’s title character in the forefront before planned follow-ups seeing the agent take center stage.
Argylle Is Inspired by James Bond
Vaughn admitted Argylle takes inspiration from the James Bond franchise, with the character possessing traits of 007 as well as Superman, a role Cavill became famous for during his decade-long spell in the DC Extended Universe. Cavill, who has been strongly linked to playing the next James Bond in the past, has starred in spy thrillers before, featuring in The Man From U.N.C.L.E and Mission: Impossible – Fallout. However, unlike those movies, Argylle is more of an action comedy, with Vaughn previously stating the movie will aim at tropes typically associated with spy films.

Argylle released its first teaser last September, which also featured the premiere date for the film. Co-distributed by Universal and Apple Original Films, Argylle was filmed across the U.K., with additional scenes shot in the U.S. and Greece. The movie cost $200 million to make, with Apple TV+ buying the rights to it in 2021.
The star-studded cast for Argylle also features Bryan Cranston, Sam Rockwell, Catherine O’Hara, Ariana DeBose, Sofia Boutella, Dua Lipa, John Cena and Samuel L. Jackson. Vaughn wrote the first film from a script penned by Jason Fuchs.
Argylle premieres in theaters on Feb. 9 before transitioning to streaming via Apple TV+ at a later date.
