While Mindy and Chad, half of the Core Four, could try to step up as main characters, the reality was that the Carpenter sisters left a huge hole in the future of the franchise. Scream 7 had obvious plans for the Carpenter sisters. This was obvious to fans, but the confirmation from the actors themselves made the status of Scream 7 look a little bleaker. Barrera told Inverse that she was only signed for two movies and there were plans for a trilogy prior to her dismissal, and Skeet Ulrich, Billy Loomis’ actor, told ScreenRant that Scream 7 was going to finish Sam’s overarching story arc.

The upside of Scream 7 outside of Campbell’s return is the return of Kevin Williamson, the man who wrote the screenplay for the first Scream. However, there is still a lot to do for the film to succeed, including confirming the actors and writing a brand-new story despite plans to continue Sam’s. Fans of Scream hope for the best, but only time will tell whether Scream 7 will save itself.
