The Scream series is one of the most iconic horror franchises still kicking. While movies like Halloween finally saw a conclusion, anybody can put on a Scream mask and continue the horrifying legacy. From the memorable characters and self-aware writing, Scream was always an all-time fan favorite up until recently. The Scream franchise has been shrouded in controversy after the firing of Melissa Barrera, the star of both Scream (2022) and 6.
Barrera was fired from Scream 7 by Spyglass after sharing support for Palestinians on her social media. Her firing led to an uproar with fans of the franchise and some are even boycotting the next Scream movie altogether. Fortunately, Barrera is not one to be bogged down by the past and has amazing projects in store. Barrera’s Sam Carpenter will be missed by many, but a beloved parody franchise might be another opportunity for Barrera to return to Sam Carpenter, albeit with comedy injected in every aspect.
Melissa Barrera Could Do the Funniest Thing By Being In Scary Movie 6
- According to IMDB, Melissa Barrera’s first acting gig was in a horror project in 2012 titled La mujer de Judas, a Mexican romantic horror thriller.

Melissa Barrera Wants to Star in Scary Movie 6 After Scream 7 Firing
Former Scream star Melissa Barrera could get the opportunity to lampoon the franchise that fired her.
Not much is known about the upcoming Scary Movie sequel, but one thing is for sure: fans want Melissa Barrera in it. The Scary Movie series parodies horror movies and trends. Of course, this meant that Scream was a prime target for Scary Movie. The original Scream is a satire, a notion carried on in the sequels, but Scary Movie increased the satire and morphed it into parody. Even the titular character of Cindy is a play on Scream‘s Sidney.
Scary Movie was also the original title for the Scream series, once again highlighting how intertwined the films were from the start. Barrera herself has said that she is interested in being a part of the next Scary Movie installment. Barrera stated, “I always loved those movies. When I saw it announced, I was like, ‘Oh, that would be fun. That would be so fun to do.” when asked about Scary Movie 6. Fans were elated with the possibility, and to fan the flames came a surprising social media following.
Marlon Wayans, one of the original writers of Scary Movie and half of the iconic funny duo the Wayans Brothers, recently followed Melissa Barrera on Instagram. Scary Movie 6‘s writers, directors, and actors have not been announced, but Marlon Wayans’ connection to the franchise as a whole shows promise. Barrera’s comments expressing her interest in being a part of Scary Movie 6, coupled with one of the Wayans Brothers following her, could add up to a hilarious conclusion.
In short, Melissa Barrera reprising her role as Sam Carpenter in a parody movie that partially exists because of Scream would be both completely iconic and ironic. Barrera could join Tori Spelling, Jenny McCarthy, and Anthony Anderson as actors who have been in both Scream and Scary Movie. If all goes according to what fans of Barrera want, Scary Movie 6 will have Cindy, Brenda, and Sam Carpenter as the leads.
Will Scream 7 Suffer Without the Carpenter Sisters?
- Courtney Cox and Patrick Dempsey are rumored to return to Scream, but there haven’t been any official confirmations.

Scream 7 Had Big Plans for Melissa Barrera’s Character, Franchise Star Reveals
Scream franchise actor Skeet Ulrich reveals the initial plan for Melissa Barrera’s Sam Carpenter in the upcoming sequel she was set to star in.
Shortly after Melissa Barrera was fired, Jenna Ortega exited Scream 7 because of scheduling conflicts. This meant that the two main characters of this generation’s Scream films were out of commission. Fortunately for Spyglass, Neve Campbell agreed to return to the franchise despite her past issues involving salary. Outside of Neve Campbell coming back, there have only been rumors as to who else will be returning.
Neve Campbell has always been a fantastic Sidney, and 2022’s Scream showed that time hasn’t worn Sidney down yet. Her absence was definitely felt in Scream 6, despite the Core Four’s chemistry. While some fans are boycotting the film, others are forgoing the calls for a boycott and are excited about Campbell’s return as the main character. However, the lack of information pertaining to the rest of the cast and the overall plot leaves viewers guessing.
Spyglass had to pivot after both their leads left. While Mindy and Chad, half of the Core Four, could try to step up as main characters, the reality was that the Carpenter sisters left a huge hole in the future of the franchise. Scream 7 had obvious plans for the Carpenter sisters. This was obvious to fans, but the confirmation from the actors themselves made the status of Scream 7 look a little bleaker. Barrera told Inverse that she was only signed for two movies and there were plans for a trilogy prior to her dismissal, and Skeet Ulrich, Billy Loomis’ actor, told ScreenRant that Scream 7 was going to finish Sam’s overarching story arc.
The upside of Scream 7 outside of Campbell’s return is the return of Kevin Williamson, the man who wrote the screenplay for the first Scream. However, there is still a lot to do for the film to succeed, including confirming the actors and writing a brand-new story despite plans to continue Sam’s. Fans of Scream hope for the best, but only time will tell whether Scream 7 will save itself.
Scream’s Sam Carpenter Still Got an Ending to Her Story
- Melissa Barrera has attended multiple conventions for her role as Sam Carpenter, alongside other Scream actors like Matthew Lillard, Skeet Ulrich, Jamie Kennedy, and Dermot Mulroney.

‘Everything Is Perfect’: Melissa Barrera Feels Good About Scream 7 Firing
Melissa Barrera addresses the end of Sam Carpenter’s journey and why she’s not sweating her Scream 7 firing.
There is no denying that Neve Campbell’s Sidney is iconic, and her return to the franchise in Scream 7 is exciting for fans of her and the original story. However, the series was obviously moving into a new direction with the Core Four of Scream (2022) and 6. Sam Carpenter’s story deserved to live to tell another tale, but fortunately Sam and her sister, Tara, were able to get a happy ending.
Scream 6 ended with Sam choosing her sister over the chaos that called to her. The film ends with Sam picking up the Ghostface mask but, upon looking at her sister, drops the mask and walks towards the love of family. Even with the disappointment of her story not continuing in Scream 7, there is something great about a horror final girl having definitive closure. Melissa Barrera has also stated that the character and herself have gotten closure from the debacle and are ready to move on.
There are a few who still have hope that Sam Carpenter could return. Even Randy Meeks’ actor, Jamie Kennedy, is convinced that Sam’s story isn’t over and Barrera could return to the series. However, Melissa Barrera could still get a good laugh at the franchise that turned its back on her by starring in a parody like Scary Movie.
Melissa Barrera’s Current and Upcoming Projects

- Barrera attended the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University for musical theater.

‘She’s Incredible’: Abigail and Scream VI Directors Tease More Movies Starring Melissa Barrera
Exclusive: Abigail’s directors comment on their collaborations with Melissa Barrera.
Despite the Scream controversy, Melissa Barrera has been busy. Abigail, the movie about a vampire ballerina, came out on April 19th, and Barrera starred alongside Kathryn Newton and Dan Stevens. The premiere also saw Matthew Lillard, Mason Gooding, David Arquette and Skeet Ulrich showing support for Barrera, all notable actors from the Scream franchise. The movie was met with a lot of positive reviews and shows Barrera’s firing from Scream 7 has not stolen any of her charm.
Continuously, Barrera has the movie Your Monster coming out soon. Your Monster is a comedy-horror with romance and music about a woman falling in love with a monster living in her closet, with Melissa Barrera in the leading role. The film premiered at Sundance on January 18th of this year and, according to Deadline, was acquired by Vertical Entertainment. While there has not been much news on when the public will be able to view the movie, fans of Barrera and comedy-horror in general are excited about the film.
Barrera has proven herself as a great actress and one who has found comfort in the horror genre. Even the directors of Abigail have stated that they hope to continue working with Barrera. IMDB has two more projects listed as upcoming for Melissa Barrera, so fans of her should get excited about what the future has in store for her. In short, Barrera’s unexpected dismissal from the Scream franchise is by no means the end of her horror career.
