Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head Should Give Beavis a Break

The following contains spoilers for Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head Season 1, Episodes 2 and 3, “Boxed In/Beekeepers” and “Roof/River,” which debuted Thursday, Aug. 4 and Aug. 11 on Paramount+.

Beavis and Butt-Head has always gotten a certain amount of laughs out of abusing Beavis — but even by that standard, the Paramount+ revival has beaten up on him. In the first three episodes of the 2022 revival, Beavis has gotten attacked by a swarm of wasps twice, been trapped in a box for a whole week, fallen off a second-story roof hard enough to not remember his name and nearly drowned. Worst of all, in Season 1, Episode 3, “Roof/River,” he got a fishing hook stuck in his mouth and was dragged around by said hook. As if that wasn’t painful enough, he was yanked in two different directions when an impatient Butt-Head tried to pull him back.

Beavis has suffered a fair amount of injuries over his history since not only is he dumb, but he’s naive. However, in earlier seasons, at least his life-threatening moments would be mixed in with some more harmless episodes. At the least, Butt-Head would take a few lumps along with him. So far in Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head, it’s been Beavis who’s gone through a clear majority of the pain — and many of the jokes have been at his expense. It would be nice to see him catch a break… or at least let Butt-Head get the short end of the stick for a change.

It’s hard not to feel for Beavis in the Paramount+ series, because he’s also always been the more relatable one of the two main characters. He has more redeeming qualities and a genuine innocence about him. Beavis and Butt-Head Season 6, Episode 8, “It’s a Miserable Life” proves that without Butt-Head’s influence, Beavis would be a good person. He and Stewart are seen volunteering at a homeless shelter on Christmas. The recent film Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe also reveals that his alternate universe counterpart Smart Beavis is the first of any Beavis or Butt-Head in the multiverse to score, because Beavis has more people skills than Butt-Head.

So while it’s funny to see him get knocked around, when viewers see it happen so much in back-to-back episodes, there’s a certain degree of empathy. In Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head Season 1, Episode 2, “Boxed In/Beekeepers,” Beavis was the only one to lose consciousness after being stung repeatedly by angry wasps. In Season 1, Episode 3, “Roof/River,” he was the only one who fell off the roof, and most of the humor in “River” came from him constantly getting hurt. At least in “River,” Butt-Head also got hit by a bunch of boulders but he’s not the one who threw up water or unknowingly ate a fishing hook. The writers are leaning on the “Beavis gets hurt” joke a little too often.

Beavis’ misfortune has extended to the show’s music video commentaries, too. While it was hilarious to see him get teased for being a BTS fan in “Beekepers,” Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head repeated the same joke (only not as well) in “Roof.” The guys’ commentary for Post Malone’s “Circles” was also Beavis liking the video and Butt-Head criticizing him for it. The series shouldn’t be repeating jokes this early in the run. Plus, part of the fun is that Beavis doesn’t disagree with Butt-Head that often, so moments like Beavis kicking Butt-Head are really surprises.

Beavis can’t — and shouldn’t — escape trouble all of the time. Butt-Head bossing him around and occasionally slapping him during videos is part of their dynamic. Yet just because he’s more likely to get hurt doesn’t mean he always has to. After what he’s been through in the latest two episodes, Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head should give him a win to balance that out. Or at least not torment him for a week. Happy Beavis can be funny, too, and then the writers can spread the mayhem around.
