Missy. Elliott Reportedly Settles Songwriting Lawsuit With Former Collaborator After Seven-Year Court Battle

Missy Elliott has avoided a legal showdown in court. After a seven-year legal battle with producer Terry Williams, who claimed he co-wrote some of her iconic ’90s tracks, the rap legend settled the dispute shortly before the trial’s start. This case has been brewing forever, and at one point, it even saw Aaliyah’s name dragged into the complaint. Here’s a breakdown of what happened…

Details On Missy Elliott’s Ongoing Lawsuit

For seven years, Missy Elliott has been tangled in a lawsuit with Terry Williams, a former collaborator who swore he co-wrote four songs for her, per Hot New Hip Hop. These tracks were reportedly from her group Sista’s 1994 album, ‘4 All the Sistas Around Da World.’ Terry claimed in his complaint that Elliott published their joint work without giving him credit or royalties. He even mentioned Aaliyah’s 1996 song ‘Heartbroken’ in the suit, alleging he was entitled to compensation and credit. But the court rejected his request. In August 2024, U.S. District Judge Nitza Quiñones Alejandro dismissed Terry’s claim about Aaliyah’s song because he waited over two decades to raise the issue.

The Reason Behind The Long Delay In Missy’s Lawsuit

But the case wasn’t over. Terry continued to fight for recognition as a co-author on the Sistas tracks, as well as damages for breach of contract, and compensation for what he called “unjust enrichment.” Elliott, on the other hand, claimed she had written the songs on her own while staying firm on protecting her legacy as a songwriter. The dispute carried on, with Terry representing himself after his lawyer reportedly bailed in 2019, during which time some claims against record labels and Timbaland were also dismissed.

By August, jury selection was about to start in a Philadelphia federal courtroom. And on August 22, a settlement was reached, saving Missy from a trial altogether. It’s worth noting that specific details regarding the settlement have not been publicly disclosed.

Missy Recently Made Headlines For Her Futuristic Coachella Performance

While legal drama tried to slow her roll, Missy was out here stealing the show at Coachella in April. She pulled up like a Transformer, emerging from a car exoskeleton to a futuristic fit, kicking off with ‘Throw It Back.’ The crowd lost it as she ran through hits like ‘Work It,’ ‘Get Ur Freak On,’ and ‘Lose Control,’ with slick choreography and a stage design that had the desert turnt. And no special guests needed… she carried the stage on her own, proving why she’s a living legend at 54.

Following her show, Missy took to Instagram, thanking fans for the love and support they showed during her set. In an IG post shared in April, she wrote, “I LOVE yall & I had so much fun with yall! Yall was on 100🆙 🧨 Spaceship #757 is taking off now but I will see you somewhere.”
