A new record has been set in the MonsterVerse thanks to Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
Since its debut on Apple TV+ in November, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has been largely well-received. The series currently sits with a score of 84% fresh at Rotten Tomatoes, and this officially makes the show the highest-rated release from the MonsterVerse on the review aggregator website. That score puts the show ahead of Netflix’s animated series Skull Island, which was released in June and is now No. 2 at Rotten Tomatoes with its 82% fresh score. The films Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) and Godzilla (2014) are both tied at 76% fresh, while Kong: Skull Island (2017) is also fresh at 75%. The only “rotten” installment is 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters with its 42% score.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is still in the midst of its debut season, set to conclude on Jan. 12. The series follows the members of the Monarch organization over the course of decades as they encounter “Titans” like Godzilla. Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell share a role as Lee Shaw, portraying the character in different time periods. The show also stars Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Mari Yamamoto, Anders Holm, Joe Tippett, Elisa Lasowski, and John Goodman.
Godzilla Dominates Pop Culture 70 Years Later
“Honestly, he’s such a big part of pop culture,” series star Anna Sawai said in an interview with CBR, referring to Godzilla’s 70th anniversary in 2024. “I think he is a monster, but we’re all dealing with our personal issues, both internal and external. It’s a figure that represents that.”

Godzilla is indeed more popular than ever. The character can also be seen on the big screen in Toho’s hit film Godzilla Minus One, which has shattered several box office records. A new ad campaign in Japan also sees Godzilla crossing over with McDonald’s. Meanwhile, another MonsterVerse movie is preparing to drop in 2024, as Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will be released in theaters on April 24, 2024.
