Netflix planning to rollout live streaming for the first time

- Advertisment -

The next time you settle in to watch a Selling Sunset reunion, you might be able to watch it live. Netflix is exploring options for live streaming for the first time, specifically for unscripted shows and comedy specials.

According to the Deadline exclusive, Netflix is still in the early stages of development for the possibility of live streaming. It’s not too surprising, since one of Netflix’s biggest competitors, Disney+ is also planning to do the same thing and it would also give Netflix yet another way to push network television out into the past.

While streaming has had a leg-up on network and broadcast for a while now, streamers have not been able to compete in any real way when it comes to live shows, including live voting for competition series and talent contests. Netflix wants to change that and one example is for the upcoming dance competition series Dance 100 from one of the producers of The Circle.

Another example is the Netflix Is a Joke festival. As far as we know, Netflix has been filming many of the shows and performances, with plans to debut around 12 on the service. These shows included notable stand-up routines from people like Larry David and Pete Davidson.

If Netflix Is a Joke returns, then Netflix might opt to livestream the festival on its platform for subscribers who cannot be there in person.

As mentioned above, Netflix is also exploring the possibility of hosting live reunion specials for series like the popular Selling Sunset. Similarly, we could see shows like Love is Blind and The Circle follow suit, especially since Netflix already uses experimental release methods for those shows.

This move would be a big one for Netflix as we know there is still something to spectacle of seeing something live, like the days when millions of viewers would tune-in for shows like American Idol and Dancing with the Stars.

Speaking of, Disney+ recently acquired Dancing with the Stars in a landmark move and it will be the streaming service’s first-ever live series. Netflix will want to stay on top of this trend if it ushers in a new wave for other services to follow.
