According to director/writer James Gunn, at least one familiar face will be missing out on the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special fun.
When asked by a fan if an image containing Baby Groot was official and a sign that the Holiday Special would occupy a unique place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline, Gunn confirmed the picture was fanmade. “Not all of those characters are even in the Holiday special,” Gunn explained in a Tweet. The image in question featured Star-Lord, Baby Groot, Drax, Rocket Racoon, Nebula, Gamora and Mantis. At the time of writing, it’s currently unknown which characters will be present in the festive special. Gunn also clarified precisely where the special fits in the MCU’s chronology, writing that it “takes place between Thor 4 & Vol 3.”
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and the Holiday Special were filmed simultaneously, leading to rampant speculation as to who will be absent from the adventure. Several fans speculated that Groot or Gamora may not appear, but audiences will have to wait for the Holiday Special to air on Disney+ to know for sure.
According to Gunn, the Holiday Special might be the “greatest thing I’ve ever done in my life.” The filmmaker described the project as “totally ridiculous” and praised it for being “unlike anything that anyone’s ever seen before.” Karen Gillan, who reprises her role as Nebula in both Vol. 3 and the Holiday Special, agreed with Gunn. “I think it’s gonna be extremely funny,” she said.
Before the Guardians arrive to brighten up the holiday season, they will take to the big screen one more time as part of the cast of Thor: Love and Thunder, which will be released in theaters on July 8. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff and Karen Gillan will all appear in Love and Thunder alongside Chris Hemsworth’s Thor. Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper, who voice Groot and Rocket respectively, are also confirmed to reprise their roles. The fourth Thor movie will see Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster take up the mantle of the God of Thunder and wield Mjolnir for the first time as the heroes aim to stop the threat of new villain Gorr, the God Butcher, played by Christian Bale.
Although Love and Thunder was written and directed by Taika Waititi, Gunn was able to look over the script to make sure that the dialogue was appropriate for the Guardians characters. With Vol. 3 due to be released in 2023, continuity was of great importance. “I asked for some things to be adjusted and they were adjusted,” Gunn said of the script.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will be released in December 2022 on Disney+.
