German Nurse Convicted In 10 Deaths, 27 Attempts
According to reports, the unnamed nurse was found guilty on Wednesday of murdering 10 patients and attempting to murder 27 more through lethal injections. Prosecutors told the court in Aachen that he injected his mostly elderly patients with dangerously high doses of painkillers and sedatives — not out of mercy, but to make his night shifts easier. The crimes, which took place between December 2023 and May 2024, have left an entire community in shock and mourning.
Prosecutors Detail Nurse’s Cold, Calculated Killings
Investigators say the nurse had been working at the hospital in Wuerselen, near Aachen, since 2020. Additionally, he completed his nursing training back in 2007. But, prosecutors painted a dark picture of his behavior. He allegedly showed “irritation” with patients who needed more attention and acted like the “master of life and death.” Prosecutors also told the court that the unnamed nurse suffered from a personality disorder, never showed compassion to patients, and showed no remorse.
The court revealed that he used morphine and midazolam — powerful sedatives — to quietly end lives during his shifts. His actions were so severe that the court declared his guilt to have “particular severity of guilt.” In other words, he has almost no chance of early release after 15 years — the minimum period for life sentences in Germany.
More Victims Feared As Probe Widens In Case
But, the story doesn’t stop there. Authorities have now launched further investigations into additional suspicious deaths that may be connected to him. Several exhumations are already underway to determine whether there are even more victims. Furthermore, this process that could lead to more charges down the line.
This chilling case has drawn comparisons to that of Niels Högel, another former nurse who was sentenced to life in 2019 after being convicted of murdering 85 patients in northern Germany. Both cases highlight a dark side of the medical field — where those entrusted with care instead use their position to play god. And while justice has been served in the courtroom, for many families, the pain and questions are just beginning.
