Oh-So-Sad Writers Guild Demands Investigation Into Colbert Cancellation, Calls It a Bribe to Trump – RedState

As liberal tears continue to flow in Hollywood over the cancellation of CBS’ leftist propaganda offering “The Late Show” with unfunny host Stephen Colbert, the Writers Guild thinks there needs to be… an investigation. Seriously, now a network can’t cancel a show without the Justice Department’s approval?

When I first saw the news, I wondered to myself, how can they possibly call for New York Attorney General Letitia James to step in? What is against the law about cancelling an under-performing show that is hemorrhaging money for its network?

Oh, it’s a bribe to Trump. I should have thought of that one.

I looked for the announcement on X, but the Writers Guild of America took to virtue-signalling on that social media platform and wrote, “The Writers Guild of America East will no longer be active on Instead, they pointed me to the venomous far-left version of X, Bluesky:

They claim the cancellation is not due to sluggish ratings or plunging profits, but it’s all about a big corporate merger:

The Writers Guild of America is calling on New York Attorney General Letitia James to investigate CBS’ cancellation of “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” accusing the network’s parent company of attempting to bribe President Donald Trump amid a high-stakes corporate merger, The Hill reported.

The Writers Guild of America East and West represents writers on the Colbert program and others in the television industry. In a statement, the Guild questioned whether the cancellation was designed to benefit Paramount Global, CBS’ parent company, which recently settled a lawsuit filed by Trump and is pursuing a $28 billion merger with Skydance that requires regulatory approval.

It’s been a tumultuous year over at CBS, as they were forced to fork over $16 million to settle a Trump defamation suit concerning its corrupt editing of a Kamala Harris interview right before the presidential election. Two days before the cancellation of his show, Colbert said on air that the settlement was a “big, fat bribe.”

Reports indicate that the move was decided upon before Colbert made those remarks, but even if this does turn out to be retaliation, wouldn’t almost anyone reading this be fired from their job if they publicly trashed their own company? It certainly doesn’t seem to warrant the intervention of “I will spend my last dying breath trying to get Trump” Letitia James’ involvement.

Here’s the big problem that the WGA doesn’t mention:

CBS canceled The Late Show with Stephen Colbert because it was losing $40 million a year, it was claimed.

Puck journalist Matthew Belloni revealed Colbert’s astonishing lack of profitability Friday, hours after CNN first broke the news that the show was canceled because it was in the red.

Belloni outlined how The Late Show – whose cancelation was announced Thursday – costs $100m a year to produce, with Colbert, 61,  getting paid between $15 million and $20 million a year to host.

Adam Schiff, the WGA, Jimmy Kimmel and others can whine all they want, but we aren’t yet at the place in this country when a network can be forced to keep producing a low-rated, money-losing show. I can’t imagine this WGA complaint going very far.

That being said, we’ve seen some wacky stuff so far in 2025, and perhaps Judge James Boasberg will find a way to insert himself into the situation.

So many Hollywood “stars” seem to have gone off the deep end and devoted themselves to far-left causes that regular Americans have no interest in.
