One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda once revealed why he added the 2-year timeskip to the series.
Via the One Piece fan and interview translator Sandman, Oda revealed, “As a 17-year-old Luffy, there was no way he could defeat a strong enemy like Yonko. That is why we needed two years. This is to have Luffy’s growth be supplemented by imagination. The reason I chose two years was because I didn’t want to make Luffy that much of an adult.😇.”

Shonen Anime and Manga Has a History of Teenage Protagonists Beating the Odds
As One Piece fans remember, Luffy was only 17 when he and the Straw Hats reached Sabaody on their way to the new world. After Kuma’s intervention and then Ace’s death, Luffy decided to change the meet-up time from three days to two years. Despite Oda’s reasoning, Luffy is far from the youngest character to have taken down the world’s strongest villains. CBR lists the ages of Naruto characters at the end of Shippuden, revealing that the titular protagonist was aged just 17 when he ended the Fourth Great Ninja War, even despite the timeskip from Part I. Deku during My Hero Academia‘s final saga is currently 16, while Jujutsu Kaisen‘s Yuji Itadori is possibly even younger at age 15 despite Jujutsu Kaisen being scheduled to end this year.
Other recently resurfaced interviews suggest that the two-year gap in One Piece was just one of the ways that Oda manages his most annoying character. While the timeskip added years to Luffy’s tenure as a pirate, the Straw Hats have only actually sailed together for less than a year. Despite this, it wasn’t enough to take down Kaido on his own, with Luffy needing help from Yamato and the Akazaya Nine. While One Piece fans typically find themselves in powerscaling discussions, in many cases, pure strength has always played second fiddle to bonds and the power of friendship.
