Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan recalled an unforgettable experience he had during the opening night of his acclaimed biographical drama.
In a recent interview with Variety, Nolan shared that he and his family, including wife and producing partner Emma Thomas, secretly went to one of Oppenheimer’s sold-out IMAX screenings during its opening night. He revealed that they sneaked into the back of the theater at Manhattan’s AMC Lincoln Square in hopes of personally seeing the audience’s reaction towards Oppenheimer. The Oscar-nominated filmmaker revealed that he was surprised and amazed at the level of concentration and attention that the audience gave to the film, which was something he had never seen before.
“It was a remarkable experience to be there,” Nolan said. “Every seat was filled, and the focus on what was happening on-screen was so strong. That level of engagement was something that I’d never really felt before. Real attention was being paid.” According to Nolan, he felt the audience’s intense reactions the most during the scene when Cillian Murphy’s Oppenheimer and his team prepare to detonate the first nuclear bomb.
Oppenheimer centers around the life of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, also known as the father of the atomic bomb. The film chronicles the groundbreaking creation of the nuclear weapon and its world-changing aftermath. An all-star ensemble cast consisting of Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Alden Ehrenreich, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Gary Oldman, Alex Wolff, Devon Bostick, David Dastmalchian and more accompanied Murphy.

Oppenheimer Includes Three Different Genres
When explaining the different genres featured in Oppenheimer, Nolan divided the story into three parts which he considered as three different movies put together as one. “The film starts as a sort of heroic origin story, if you like: Young Oppenheimer,” the director claimed. “And then, in the middle of the film, when it jumps onto the Los Alamos project, it becomes a heist film, really. It’s about trying to put a team together and pull off an impossible project. In terms of imagery, I’ve always thought that part was very much a Western. The last act is a full-on courtroom drama. I’ve always been fascinated by courtroom dramas, I always wanted to make one.”
During its theatrical run, Oppenheimer earned a total gross of over $940 million at the worldwide box office, giving Nolan his highest-grossing film outside The Dark Knight trilogy. It has also set a new record by becoming the second highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, which was previously held by 2018’s Deadpool 2. Following its successful theatrical release, fans may soon get to watch Oppenheimer in the comfort of their homes, as it is currently scheduled to arrive on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and digital on Nov. 21 in time for Thanksgiving.
