Hugo Sanchez, 32, died after falling 40 feet over an escalator rail on July 14 during The Weeknd's tour-opening concert at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field

A Philadelphia man plunged 40 feet to his death after he apparently lost his balance and toppled over an escalator rail he was perched on while watching The Weeknd’s tour-opening concert last week.

Hugo Sanchez, 32, suffered head trauma from the fall on Thursday and was rushed to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The tragic fall happened just before 11 p.m. at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field – The Weeknd’s first stop on his North American tour.

Philadelphia Police told DailyMail.com that his fall appears to have been accidental, with ‘no foul play suspected.’

The Weeknd, who posted a thank you to Philadelphia for helping to ring in the tour, went on to perform in New York and Boston. He has not made any mention of the incident on social media.

The tour’s promoter is Live Nation, which was also the promoter of Travis Scott’s deadly Astroworld Festival in 2021 that resulted in 10 deaths and hundreds of injuries.

Philadelphia Police said Sanchez was sitting on an escalator rail when he lost his balance and fell approximately 40 feet.

Bob Lange, Senior Vice President of communications for the Philadelphia Eagles team, which operates the Lincoln, told the New York Pots that the incident likely happened after the concert was over as people were leaving the building.

His ‘After Hours til Dawn’ tour was originally set to kick off at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, but was postponed due to a nationwide power outage.

The After Hours Till Dawn Tour is The Weeknd’s first-ever trek through the world playing stadiums, and is in support of his fourth and fifth studio albums After Hours (2020) and Dawn FM (2022).

Two years in the making, the tour was originally set to begin on June 11, 2020, in Vancouver and to conclude on November 16 in London, England.

However, due to concerns from the COVID-19 pandemic and health concerns related to indoor arena shows, all of the original dates were postponed, instead of cancelled, and re-scheduled in favor of an out-door all-stadium trek.

As a result of the much larger venues on the docket, The Weeknd and his team have had to revamp nearly all of the ideas that were planned for the original 2020 tour.

And it turns out it was his recent Super Bowl Halftime performance that gave them the inspiration and confidence to go big.

‘We definitely took inspiration from the Super Bowl performance — and expanded it,’ longtime creative director La Mar Taylor disclosed, adding, ‘There were so many restrictions and constraints around that performance that we could not fully realize the vision we had for it. Now we can.’

Additional legs are planned for Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle East and South America.
