Patty Murray Rails Against Costco Refusing to Sell Mifepristone Abortion Pill, Shows Dems Missed the Memo – RedState

Democrat Senator Patty Murray (WA) isn’t the first and won’t be the last member of her party to hurl false accusation at Republicans over the practice of abortion, which remains one of the far-left Democrat Party’s sacred articles of faith.

On Friday, Murray railed against the left’s latest failure to grow access to what many in their ranks refer to as “women’s healthcare” but often results in rising rates of abortion among some of our most vulnerable fellow Americans.

We need to back up to where this all started, though, when major U.S. big-box retailer Costco announced on Thursday it will not be selling the abortion drug mifepristone at its stores. This came after some pro-life activists and conservative organizations reached out to the company to not put the drug on its pharmacy shelves. Costco runs over 500 pharmacies inside its locations across the country:

“Our position at this time not to sell mifepristone, which has not changed, is based on the lack of demand from our members and other patients who we understand generally have the drug dispensed by their medical providers,” Costco said in a statement, according to Reuters.

The move follows ongoing pressure from religious activist groups, such as Inspire Investing and Alliance Defending Freedom, which have urged Costco not to offer the drug. The Inspire Investing website encourages the retail giant to “make the right choice to protect women and unborn children.”

Alliance Defending Freedom celebrated the “win” against progressive pro-abortion activists that the announcement signals:

The legal advocacy group’s Senior Vice President, Jeremy Tedesco, gave “credit to @Inspireadvisor @JerryLeeBowyer @AMACforAmerica @SFOF_States & other fiduciary trustees who fought back,” while giving major “kudos” to not only Costco but the big three U.S. grocery giants–Walmart, Kroger, and Albertsons–” for protecting shareholder value over activist demands.”

Cue the fits of anger by Sen. Murray over the move. The Washington lawmaker said in a statement, released on Friday that the company only did so at the behest of those evil right-wingers who want to stop women from getting “healthcare.”

“I am deeply alarmed by news reports that Costco is refusing to sell safe, effective, and legal medication for no other reason than to appease the politics of anti-abortion fanatics,” she said.  “I refuse to stand by and allow far-right extremists to bully major corporations and dictate what medicine women can or cannot get access to.”

The senator went on, “Where it is legal, retailers and major pharmacies must absolutely make medication abortion available to the women who need it.”

I have bad news for Murray. She and her liberal pals seem to have, once again, missed the memo. As my colleague Jennifer Oliver O’Connell wrote in the story, linked above, giving some positive details from the exit polling on the 2024 election:

Forty-three percent of women 18-29 voted for President-elect Trump. Vice President and selected Democrat nominee Kamala Harris was banking on young women’s upset over Dobbs and the falsehood of “reproductive rights” being threatened. However, the post-election analysis shows that women in general weren’t falling for that canard.

That’s not the only major way the Democrats are wrong here. Notice the reason Costco gave for choosing not to stock the medical abortion drug. They simply aren’t getting enough orders for it, as their statement showed, it was “based on the lack of demand from our members and other patients who we understand generally have the drug dispensed by their medical providers.”

And we’re going to keep seeing righteous attorneys general in red states bringing lawsuit to protect women’s health (and babies’ lives), as I wrote on in a Texas case.

Does Murray have a point with her diatribe? Yes, pro-life supporters asked Costco to refrain from making the drug available. But so what? There’s also this unavoidable fact the Democrats can’t hide from. Aren’t they always going on and on about medical decisions being made between women and their doctors? This is what’s happening, along with the forces of the free market at work.
