TOMS RIVER – A pedestrian who attempted to cross busy Hooper Avenue near James Street died Saturday after being struck by a vehicle, according to Toms River Police.

In a notice posted on the police Facebook page, investigators stated the accident occurred at 6 p.m. Friday when Ebony Shepherd, 34, of Johnston, Pa., sought to climb over the traffic barriers that divide the roadway and was struck.

Shepherd was taken to Community Medical Center and subsequently airlifted to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Brunswick, police said. She died at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Police said the driver of the vehicle, who was not identified, showed no signs of impairment and was not injured in the incident, which is being investigated by the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department CSI Unit.
