PGA Championship – Round One: Leaderboard, tee times and updates as Rory McIlroy enjoys flying start, and Xander Schauffele streaks clear at the top

Robert MacIntyre is now tied for second, three strokes behind Xander Schauffele, after back-to-back birdies at Valhalla. He’s tied with Tony Finau.

Xander Schuaffele just sank his eighth birdie of the day to take a three-stroke lead at -8 during the first round of the PGA Championship at Valhalla. Tony Finau is in second place at -5.

Rory continued his good start on the front nine with a beautiful approach onto the green and an easy putt on hole No 2 to stay at 2-under.

After a shaky back nine, Tiger Woods is back even for the first time in several holes with a birdie on No 3.

Xander Schauffele now holds a three-stroke lead at Valhalla at -4. Tony Finau is still in second place at -4.

After saving par to end the back nine after hitting it into the water, Rory McIlroy birdied on hole No 1 and stands at -2.

No one has any idea where Rory McIlroy’s drive on hole No 18 went. The Northern Irishman and several others are searching for the ball after he sliced it. It possibly ended up in the water.

Stephan Jaeger is now at -3, two strokes off the lead.

It took eight holes, but Rory McIlroy had his first drop shot of the day, falling to -1 at hole No 17, four strokes off the leader, Xander Schauffele.

Tiger Woods could have had a way more disastrous start at Valhalla, but made some clutch putts to keep him near even at +1 through nine holes, six shots off the leader.

Xander Schauffele has a two-stroke lead over the rest of the field, as he has completed his openoing nine holes of the tournament at -5.

A group of four others sit at -3, including Jordan Spieth.

Tony Finau and Dean Burmester both are one stroke behind Xander Schauffele at -3.

On hole No 14, Max Homa chipped out of the bunker and sunk the ball in the hole to save par.

After his tee shot left the fairway, Rory McIlroy’s approach to the hole did not hit the green and instead, found the bunker.

Plenty of eyes are on Tiger Woods to see if he can hold up physically throughout this weekend at Valhalla.

Through six holes, Woods has made some clutch shots to stay at +1.

The defending PGA Champion, Brooks Koepka, has missed a few birdie putts in his opening five holes. He sits at -1.

Rory has had a solid first six holes, but sits two strokes behind Xander Schauffele for the lead at -2.

Dustin Johnson is not one of the players off to a good start at Valhalla. He had to take two shots among the trees on No 15.

In his first PGA Championship appearance, Doug Ghim has started strong and joins the leaders at -3.

Rory McIlroy stays one shot off the leaders after remaining at -2 with a par on his fifth hole of the day at No 14.

Xander Schauffele and Jordan Spieth have risen up the leaderboard to join Viktor Hovland at -3 for the lead at Valhalla.

Viktor Hovland has broken the logjam of golfers at 2-under and is the first to hit -3 at Valhalla. He has taken the lead.

We have now reached 20 golfers to start their first rounds at Valhalla under-par. MacIntyre joins the leaders at -2, with Rory McIlroy also part of the top group.

Jordan Spieth has also putted in his second birdie of the day and is now with the leaders at -2.

Rory McIlroy is now in a five-way tie for the lead at the PGA Championship at -2 after a beautiful birdie putt on the island green of No 13.

Sahith Theegala, Doug Ghim, Viktor Hovland and Xander Schauffele all are also at -2.

When Tiger Woods won the PGA Championship at Valhalla in 2000, he did not birdie in any of the four rounds on the iconic No 13 hole. After 24 years, he finally got that birdie to pull even.

Rory’s long birdie putt on No 12 fell just short, keeping the Northern Irishman at -1.

Xander Schauffele and Doug Ghim hold an early lead at Valhalla at -2. Ghim has completed six holes of his first round, while Schauffele just finished his fourth.

Through three holes, Woods stays at +1. However, his putt to save par on No 12 must have felt like a birdie, sinking it from about 20 feet.

Rory stayed at 1-under after his second hole of the day with a par on No 11.

Although it is incredibly early at Valhalla, Rory McIlroy’s birdie on his first hole currently has him in a tie for the lead at -1 with several others.

Before the golf gets underway, it would be remiss of us to not mention the story that has dominated the headlines leading into this tournament: Rory McIlroy’s divorce from his wife Erica Stoll.

Although the media were warned about questioning McIlroy on the subject, it’s fair to say it was a huge shock – with the news dropping just three days out from the start of play this morning.
