UFC 324: Paddy Pimblett predicts knockout of Justin Gaethje

Tonight, Paddy Pimblett fights for UFC gold for the first time, as the Liverpudlian takes on Justin Gaethje in Las Vegas. But as “Paddy The Baddy” and Gaethje clash at UFC 324, there is more on the line than just the interim lightweight title.

The winner of tonight’s main event should be next for regular champion Ilia Topuria, Pimblett’s bitter rival, who is currently taking a break from MMA for personal reasons. Pimblett could therefore set up one of the biggest fights in the sport, or Gaethje could become a two-time interim champ, after the American held that version of the belt in 2020.

While Gaethje, 37, has twice failed to win the undisputed title and is in the last-chance saloon this year, Pimblett, 31, is a newcomer to lights as bright as these. Yet he has continued to defy his doubters in staying unbeaten in the UFC, and he saw off a former MMA champion last time out by stopping Michael Chandler.

Tonight’s co-main event was due to see all-time great Amanda Nunes emerge from retirement to challenge an old teammate, bantamweight queen Kayla Harrison, but the latter sustained an injury last week. As such, Sean O’Malley vs Song Yadong was pushed up the card, with an allegation of racism feeding into their fight.

UFC 324 live: Ateba Gautier vs Andrey Pulyaev

Gautier has definitely slowed down. Pulyaev is throwing precise southpaw crosses and jabs, as well as body kicks. He’s doing it all while on the back foot, too.

Still, Gautier gets through with a one-two. Now he lands a right cross that sees Pulyaev stumble to the mat, but it was a balance issue – not a matter of damage.

Pulyaev is breathing out of his mouth, is he slowing down now? Yes! Gautier with a second wind, and he’s mixing in knees with straights and hooks!

Both men are bleeding from the nose. Gautier swipes across Pulyaev’s face with a high kick. One minute to go.

It was a brief second wind from Gautier, in the end. This one is surely level at 19-19, heading into the final frame.

UFC 324 live: Ateba Gautier vs Andrey Pulyaev

Pulyaev stands southpaw and looks to stay calm early. Oh, but he’s dropped by the first punch that Gautier throws!! My word, we told you to look out for Gautier…

Pulyaev manages to stand and survive Gautier’s follow-up punches and a couple of knees to the body, and Pulyaev even lands a couple of decent counters!

Pulyaev, after that early adversity, is managing to slow the pace somewhat. Still, Gautier is trying to keep that pace high, pressing forward incessantly.

Gautier is so much thicker than Pulyaev, who looks wiry in comparison. Nice overhand left from Pulyaev, though, and Gautier just misses with a hook after catching a hook.

Sloppy kick from Gautier, and he slips. More lands from Pulyaev. Now Gautier is slowing down, late in the round. Is that weight counting against him?

The punch stats favour his Russian opponent.

UFC 324 live: Ateba Gautier vs Andrey Pulyaev

The regular prelims continue, with rising middleweight monster Ateba Gautier taking on Andrey Pulyaev.

Gautier, who trains out of Manchester, is 9-1 as a pro and rides an eight-fight win streak – and all of those wins have come via KO/TKO.

In fact, seven of them were achieved in the first round, and the other in round two.

Basically, the Cameroonian is a scary prospect. But 10-3 opponent Pulyaev represents his toughest test yet (on paper).

UFC 324 live: Nikita Krylov vs Modestas Bukauskas

Bukauskas likely needs a finish. At the very least, he needs to win this round – and to hope he won round one, which I don’t think he did.

Bukauskas goes southpaw, looking for a new way through. Back to orthodox and he tags Krylov, but it’s the Russian who’s got the better of the early exchanges in round three.

Bukauskas is pressing forward but throwing his punches too wide. Still, another orthodox jab lands for him, and now a swiping left hook.

Bukauskas is the one on the back foot now, and he’s landing sporadically but without troubling Krylov, who is favouring body kicks.

Oh! In the final 10 seconds, Krylov drops Bukauskas out of nowhere with a right overhand, and the Briton turns facedown to the canvas! Ref Marc Goddard waves this one off, and Bukauskas immediately protests!

UFC 324 live: Nikita Krylov vs Modestas Bukauskas

For the first time tonight, we see a second round! Krylov likely took the first with his grappling control.

And with that in mind, Krylov is able to get another clinch against the fence. But this time, Bukauskas reverses the position. He’s holding Krylov with overhooks, but the flipside is Krylov has underhooks.

Will Bukauskas be able to detach himself? He’s struggling to, and now he eats a knee to the body. Finally, though, the 205lbers are out in the open again.

Krylov catches his opponent on the end of a head kick. Bukauskas wants the fight in this space, but he’s not capitalising. He has bad swelling on the left side of his face, too.

UFC 324 live: Nikita Krylov vs Modestas Bukauskas

Bukauskas switches stances back and forth. He tags Krylov with a couple of clean right straights. Krylov shoots for a single-leg, driving Bukauskas to the fence.

Krylov seeks a trip, but Bukauskas does well to deny him and throw some short strikes to deter the Russian. But Krylov is clinging tightly to a body lock.

He finally manages to trip Bukauskas, who stands at once. The fans in T-Mobile Arena boo as Krylov fails to advance the position.

Bukauskas eventually gets free and looks to keep the fight standing, while Krylov throws a few low kicks. Krylov with a wild entry now, but Bukauskas can’t punish him.

Oh, Krylov seems to stun Bukauskas with a counter jab. The Briton is okay before the buzzer, though.

UFC 324 live: Nikita Krylov vs Modestas Bukauskas

Three fights, three first-round TKOs!

We roll on, with Nikita Krylov facing Modestas Bukauskas at light-heavyweight next.

British-Lithuanian Bukauskas has been a fighter reborn since returning to the UFC after an ill-fated first run, and a win here would be one of his best yet.

Still, he’s a fighter who often flirts with danger, and Krylov has a habit of snatching submissions, so Bukauskas must beware…

UFC 324 live: Alex Perez vs Charles Johnson

Perez is overeager and sloppy with an entry early on, and he’s popped with a one-two as he stumbles to his knees.

Johnson has thrown a few high kicks already, and one nearly gets through… Oh! Out of nowhere, he’s dropped hard!

Perez, still a ball of energy, goes in for the knockout, but Johnson scrambles to his feet…

But he’s on wobbly legs and eating hard, intermittent shots… He’s trying to evade and buy time, but he’s so unsteady.

Johnson falls to his knees but Perez can’t find the killer punch, and again Johnson stands! Somehow…

He hits the canvas one final time, and it’s mercifully waved off! He still tries a single-leg on Perez, wayyyy on delay, a testament to how little cognition he has right now…

UFC 324 live: Josh Hokit vs Denzel Freeman

Hokit shoots for a takedown immediately! He forces Freeman to the fence and dumps him down with a double-leg, having briefly tried a single-leg.

Hokit take the back of Freeman, who’s on his knees for a while here… Hokit doesn’t advance the position or fire off any punches for quite a while, but now he’s working. Somewhere in there, Hokit slaps Freeman’s backside mockingly, jeez.

He’s letting short punches go, but Freeman takes the opportunity to stand. Freeman gets loose, and Hokit stings him with a jab.

Now a knee to the body has Freeman retreating. A right hand to the body, then a front kick, before Hokit lands an uppercut to the head – this is slick stuff.

Freeman drops to his knees, and Hokit throws some ground and pound before seeking a rear naked choke. A scramble sees Freeman stand, but he’s taking a beating in the boxing exchanges – 65-0 is the UFC’s total-strikes stat!!

Freeman is also exhausted, lolloping all over the place. He drops to his knees right before the buzzer sounds, while Hokit walks away and flips him off, and the ref waves it off! Wow. An odd fight-ending visual, but Freeman was done to be fair.
