Police apologise for tasering white ex-ballet dancer, 80, mistaken for black suspect in his 30s

An 80-year-old white ex-ballet dancer mistaken for a black suspect in his 30s and tasered in his kitchen has lastly acquired a public apology from police chiefs.

Roy Morton was woken on December 28 by officers armed with sub-machine weapons who smashed by means of his entrance door, tasered him, pinned him to the ground and handcuffed him after allegedly mixing up his tackle.

Chief Superintendent Philip Ryan, from Scotland Yard’s specialist firearms command, stated: ‘I’m deeply sorry that this horrible error occurred and I apologise wholeheartedly to Mr Morton.’

He stated a staff is investigating what occurred however Mr Morton, from Cricklewood, north-west London, stated the apology was superficial and he’s ‘nonetheless very shaken’.

He stated: ‘I do not go outdoors. I simply keep indoors now with the curtains shut.

‘I really feel like an outdated man for the primary time in my life.’

Describing the second armed officers burst into his kitchen at 7am, Mr Morton instructed the Every day Mail earlier this month: ‘I used to be sporting my pyjamas simply standing there on the tiled flooring questioning desperately what the hell was occurring.

‘A minimum of 4 police in full gear carrying machine weapons had been shining dazzling shiny torches in my face, all shouting and screaming one thing unintelligible at me. They gave me no directions, nothing.

‘All of a sudden considered one of them fired this Taser at me and the electrical energy began zapping. It hit me within the abdomen and the highest of my leg and I fell to the ground of the kitchen, helpless.

‘Then they jumped on me, kneeling on my again to pin me onto the tiled flooring, twisting my arms behind my again and handcuffing me and telling me I used to be beneath arrest for affray.’

Describing his ‘state of shock and confusion’, he stated officers then watched him dress and go to the bathroom earlier than taking him away. 

Mr Morton – who was fitted with a pacemaker 25 years in the past for a situation known as coronary heart block – stated he was taken to the Royal Free Hospital in north London after the arrest to have the gadget examined.

He was later transferred to Colindale Police Station in a ‘filthy’ police van the place he was instructed concerning the mix-up.
