Migrant Crime

Limits must be placed on the number of migrants in taxpayer-funded shelters in Massachusetts, Governor Maura Healey (D) now admits. Massachusetts has been overwhelmed by illegal immigrants flocking to the Democrat-run sanctuary state to avoid deportation and take advantage of its lax enforcement of criminal statutes.

The Democrat governor says her administration is exploring barring illegal immigrants from accessing state shelters. The proposal follows a review of the state’s right-to-shelter law and requires applicants to verify U.S. citizenship, lawful permanent residency, or presence “under the color of law.” Exceptions are granted for families with children who are U.S. citizens or lawful residents.

Additionally, Healey aims to enhance background checks for shelter residents, mandating disclosure of criminal convictions. Applicants would need to verify identity, residency, and immigration status before being admitted, a change from current practice where documentation can be provided post-admittance. The proposal also restricts shelter eligibility due to eviction only to cases within Massachusetts itself.

“I believe these changes are appropriate and needed to ensure the long-term sustainability of the state shelter system in a way that aligns with the original intent of the law,” Healey said in a statement. She added: “In addition, these proposed changes will allow us to continue to ensure the safety of our system, support cities and towns in addressing the needs of unhoused families in their communities and put us on the path toward a more fiscally sustainable shelter system.”

The push for reform arises amidst escalating safety concerns linked to illegal immigrants, with incidents ranging from rapes to drug-related charges reported. State records indicate numerous significant incidents at shelters.

Despite the changes, Healey has vowed not to cooperate with the Trump administration’s plan for mass deportations.
