Quantum Leap Sequel Series Gets Canceled After Two Seasons at NBC

Bad news has been revealed for fans of the Quantum Leap sequel series at NBC. It has just been revealed that the network has pulled the plug on the series after a two-season run, following the second season wrapping on NBC in February.

The news was revealed by The Hollywood Reporter on Friday. Reportedly, the show was one of the lowest-rated scripted originals on NBC, and this most likely played the biggest part in the show getting canceled. Even so, some fans may still be shocked to hear about the renewal, and this is bound to be disappointing for those who’ve been watching. Of course, it’s always possible that the series could be saved by moving to another network or streaming service, but it’s not yet clear if the show will be shopped around, or if this is truly the end.

NBC’s original Quantum Leap focused on the lives Dr. Sam Beckett leaped into — an approach the 2022 series keeps alive with Dr. Ben Song.

This marks NBC’s first cancelation for the television season. The network has already renewed five Dick Wolf-produced shows – Chicago Fire, Chicago PD, Chicago Med, Law & Order, and Law & Order: SVU – though Law & Order: Organized Crime is still on the bubble. NBC also renewed the new shows Found and The Irrational.

Quantum Leap Gets Two Seasons on NBC

The new series did not last half as long as the original Quantum Leap, which ran for five seasons. The original show, created by Donald P. Bellisario, ended controversially by revealing with a simple title card that Scott Bakula’s Sam Beckett never made his way back home. Many fans were hoping that some closure would finally be brought to this ambiguous ending with the sequel series, perhaps even entailing an actual appearance from Bakula. That didn’t happen in the first two seasons, though hopes had remained that Bakula would appear on the show in its potential future.

Why the New Quantum Leap Could Never Have Been a Reboot

Quantum Leap showrunner Martin Gero explains why NBC’s time travel series had to be a sequel instead of a reboot of the 1989 series with Scott Bakula.

“I will respectfully always ask him to do the show,” showrunner Martin Gero said of possibly getting Bakula on the revival, despite Bakula turning down an initial offer to return. “I think it could be really exciting. But I also completely respect his wishes. He knows our enthusiasm for him. He knows our enthusiasm, our love, and our reverence for the old show. It’s a no right now. It would be pretty amazing to have him back, but I don’t know what that timeline looks like, or even if it’s possible.”

The Quantum Leap revival series can be streamed in its entirety on Peacock, and the original five-season show is also available on the streaming platform.
