RedStaters' Ideal Road Trip and What They're Listening To

The calendar might say different, but Labor Day weekend usually marks the unofficial end of summer. In most places, the kids have gone back to school, and the weather may even be beginning to change just a bit. Really, any time of the year is good for a road trip, but maybe Labor Day is preferable. Three days to hop in the car and get away from it all before fall sets in and the most organized among us begin to plan for the holidays. So where are we thinking about taking off to, and just as important, what are we listening to while we are en route? I asked some of the RedState crew.

On Thursday, RedState’s own Bob Hoge touted yet another win from President Donald Trump. Gas prices this Labor Day weekend are the lowest they have been since before the COVID-19 pandemic. A fantastic feat indeed, and probably another thing Democrats insisted could not be done, yet here we are. What more perfect excuse for a road trip escape?

So, where are we going? Well, let’s start with one of our fearless leaders, and my fellow St. Louisan, Susie Moore. We are fortunate enough in the Gateway City to be about a three and a half hour drive from the Lake of the Ozarks. In fact, when you ask someone where they are going for the weekend and they simply say “the lake,” you know where they are headed. Susie’s ideal road trip is to head down Interstate 44 to Table Rock Lake. It is among the many beautiful spots in the Ozark region. While she is headed to that getaway, she is tuned into two of her favorites, the Avett Brothers (for tunes) and the “America This Week” podcast. Two great choices. It seems that most of us here at RedState are never fully far away from what is going on in the world.

Next up, Sister Toldjah. Her ideal Labor Day road trip would be to head out to Southport, North Carolina. It has a great waterfront, plenty of great restaurants, shopping, and just hanging out and enjoying getting away. What sort of music is accompanying Sister T? A bit of U2’s “All That You Can’t Leave Behind” album and the Stone Temple Pilots’ “Purple” album. Great tunes that will get you where you need to go.

Any road trip story would not be complete without the ideal trek from Ward Clark. His love for Alaska is so evident, and so much fun to hear about. Ward would spend his ideal three days driving over the Broad Pass to Healy, which is near the entrance to Denali National Park. Most of us have only experienced the incredible beauty of Alaska through pictures and videos. I can only imagine how breathtaking it is. Accompanying Ward to Denali is some great classic rock, a very good choice. You can’t go wrong with anything from the ’70s.

I guess that leaves me. I think I would start out along Highway 94 in St. Charles County, Missouri, along the stretch known as the “Weinstrasse.” There are at least four wineries along that stretch of road, and in the fall, the scenery is unmatched. One of my favorite short trips is to pack up my picnic basket and head that way. After that, I guess I am a true St. Louisan and would head really anywhere around the Lake of the Ozarks. There are lots of party spots for the rowdy crowd, and plenty of quiet space too. But I will admit, there is a biker bar in Camdenton I have always wanted to go to. But I just have one question: When did I get too old for the rowdy crowd? What am I listening to? Well, I am probably one of the few people who can say they have Billie Holiday and Ted Nugent on the same playlist. I like it all, and my playlist has a little bit of everything.

So, with some cheap gas and some tasty tunes, that is where a few RedStaters would be headed on their ideal Labor Day road trip. In my case, for the wine part, I promise to have a designated driver. But for the other part, move over, I’ll drive.
