Respected SBS presenter Karla Grant (left) and Australia's self-proclaimed 'favourite celebrity' Nasser Sultan (right) have called it quits after about eight months together

We’ve seen plenty of famous ‘odd couples’ over the years.

But few compared to the pairing of Walkley-winning journalist Karla Grant and fame-chasing Married At First Sight desperado Nasser Sultan.

So it’s with a heavy heart we report that the respected SBS presenter and Australia’s self-proclaimed ‘favourite celebrity’ have called it quits.

They ended their whirlwind romance in September, after about eight months together.

Nasser confirmed the split to the Daily Mail on Monday, after a source tipped us off.

‘Yes we’ve [broken up] unfortunately, but remain friends,’ he said.

‘Sometimes opposites don’t attract. We had a great time but unfortunately we are on different paths. She is a lovely woman.’

Karla and Nasser were last pictured together at Damien Warren-Smith’s Classic Penguins show in Sydney on September 3.

Before that, they were joined at the hip on several red carpets, and Nasser was even on SBS’s table at the Kennedy Awards for excellence in journalism on August 15.

The couple’s relationship became public knowledge in February when Daily Mail exclusively reported how media insiders were ‘baffled’ by the unlikely match.

‘We’ve known each other for four years, to be honest,’ Nasser said at the time.

‘Then we just reconnected at a Maxim party and fell in love. That was it. It was like love at first sight – just not Married At First Sight!’

‘She’s gentle, smart, elegant, very well-educated, respected in the industry. And she’s not fake. And she’s not on Instagram.’

Indeed, while Nasser has courted publicity since his appearance on MAFS in 2018, Karla is known for her work as a presenter, producer and journalist for SBS’s national Indigenous current affairs program Living Black.

She is career-focused and rarely uses social media.

The vast differences between the two were not lost on Nasser, who told us in February they were ‘a bit like chalk and cheese’.

‘I love the red carpet. She’s a bit more subdued. But she’s just so kind and so generous and lets me do what I do – crazy!’ he said.

Karla added in a statement at the time: ‘Nasser and I have known each other for four years.

‘We met at a movie screening where Nass introduced himself and said how much he admired my work.

‘Late last year we caught up at a party. We realised we had a connection and common interests. We both enjoy going to the movies, theatre and concerts and share a love of great food and travel.

‘Nasser is one of a kind. He’s attentive, caring and thoughtful and I see how he is with those who are closest to him. He’s always helping his friends.

‘He understands how much my work means to me and is very supportive.

‘Our union was very unexpected, but it is growing into something very special.’

Karla was previously married to veteran broadcaster and former ABC Q+A host Stan Grant, with whom she shares three children, for 16 years.

Their split became front-page news in 2000 when Stan left Karla for his Seven colleague Tracey Holmes, who was dubbed by the tabloids a ‘Holmes Wrecker’.

The publicity was so intense that the scandal-plagued couple both resigned on the same day because Seven management didn’t want them to live together. They would later move to Hong Kong and spent a total of 14 years in Asia.

They married in secret at Whale Beach, Sydney, in 2001 and welcomed a son, Jesse.

Whatever acrimony existed between Karla and Tracey seems to be water under the bridge, as they reunited in 2023 in support of Stan during an ABC staff protest against how the public broadcaster handled the racist trolling he was subjected to.
