Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Gellar says she has kept her kids away from Season 6 of the show due to its controversial content.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Gellar will not let her kids watch Season 6 of her popular show because of its inappropriate content.

During the early days of the pandemic, Gellar decided that her children were finally old enough to watch Buffy, prompting her to curate a rewatch. “We watched seasons one through five,” the award-winning actor told The Hollywood Reporter. “We skipped around a lot on those last two,” she continued, referring to Seasons 6 and 7. “I have trouble with [Season 6]. It wasn’t appropriate for them at the time, and I just don’t want to rewatch it.” Season 6 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer focused on a controversial storyline involving Buffy Summer (Gellar) dealing with depression and having hate sex with a vampire who also attempted to rape her when she tried to end the relationship.

Created by Joss Whedon, Buffy the Vampire Slayer premiered in 1997 and was based on the 1992 film of the same name. It ran for five seasons on The WB with its sixth and seventh seasons airing on UPN. The protagonist of show is Buffy Summers, a vampire slayer. The vampire slayers on Buffy are tasked with battling against vampires, demons and other supernatural beings. While Buffy wants to cling to her ordinary life, she eventually embraces her identity as a vampire slayer.

The series received widespread critical acclaim and was extremely popular among audiences. Gellar was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Drama for her performance and the series was also nominated five times for Television Critics Association Awards. It was particularly praised for having a strong female lead, something that wasn’t the norm on television during the time. A spinoff, Angel, starring David Boreanaz aired on The WB for five seasons from 1999 to 2004.

Despite the popularity of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Gellar’s role, the actor recently explained that she wouldn’t want to reprise the role. “I am very proud of the show that we created and it doesn’t need to be done. We wrapped that up,” she noted. While she may not want to be a part of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer franchise anymore, she is happy to see it continue without her. “I am all for them continuing the story, because there’s the story of female empowerment,” she said. “I love the way the show was left: ‘Every girl who has the power can have the power.’ It’s set up perfectly for someone else to have the power. But like I said, the metaphors of Buffy were the horrors of adolescence. I think I look young, but I am not an adolescent,” she concluded.
