Sergio Brown Charged w/ First-Degree Murder For Mother's Death

Law enforcement officials reportedly plan to extradite former NFL player Sergio Brown to Illinois following his arrest in California. TMZ reports that his arrest warrant listed first-degree murder concerning the death of his mother, Myrtle Brown.

The outlet reports that it’s been about four weeks since police discovered his mother’s dead body in a creek in Maywood on Sept. 16. The neighborhood is reportedly about 16 miles outside Chicago. A Cook County medical examiner ruled her death a homicide after finding assault injuries on the 73-year-old related to her passing.

Soon after the news, Brown shared videos of himself via social media, denying any involvement and calling her death “fake news.” Additional social-based videos showed him seemingly partying in Mexico amid the investigation.

According to CNN, police booked Sergio Brown into a San Diego jail on Tuesday (Oct. 10). Mexican authorities reportedly located the former athlete after learning of his arrest warrant. They detained him as he attempted to re-enter the US. A CNN source said US authorities knew about his whereabouts as of Sept. 19.

He is also reportedly being held on a “felony fugitive arrest warrant,” per CNN.

As of last week, the family of Myrtle and Sergio Brown reportedly urged US authorities to expedite the investigation.

“We implore law enforcement agencies, particularly the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, to work diligently and thoroughly in pursuit of truth and accountability for Myrtle Jean Simmons-Brown. No family should bear the weight of uncertainty regarding the circumstances of their loved one’s passing,” the family statement said, per CNN.

The statement adds that there has been no contact between Segio and his family following his mother’s discovery. However, their statement reportedly said they “continue to pray for this immediate and safe return to the US” while advocating for “positive change and justice.”

The statement also described Myrtle’s character before her passing.

“Myrtle was a beautiful, loving, and inspirational soul that made everyone around her feel like they mattered. With her contagious smile and personality, our loss of Myrtle has left an indescribable void not only in our lives, but in our communities,” the statement read.
