Original Good Burger star Sinbad has a secret cameo appearance in the Paramount+ sequel Good Burger 2.
In the original movie, released in 1997, Sinbad played Mr. Wheat, a high school teacher for Dexter Reed (Kenan Thompson). The character was a key part of the first film, as Dexter crashing into his teacher’s car was what led to the teen taking a job at Good Burger, putting the events of the film in motion. Mr. Wheat was not shown on-screen in Good Burger 2, but the sequel still found a way to include Sinbad, as the actor and comedian has a vocal cameo that may not be picked up on right away by most viewers. Per /Film, screenwriter Kevin Kopelow confirmed how the plan was to bring back Mr. Wheat in a much more substantial way, but that ultimately transformed into the more subtle cameo.
Specifically, Sinbad’s voice can be heard in Good Burger 2 on the other end of the phone line as the person telling Dexter Reed that he’s out of business. This was a backup plan for Sinbad’s cameo, as the hope was to have Dexter once again crash into Mr. Wheat’s car in the beginning of the film. Scheduling issues had prevented Sinbad from making it to the set, causing this cameo to be scrapped, but it was still important for the Good Burger 2 team to include the actor in some way.
When [Kel] backed into the car [early in the movie,] he was going to pull away and Sinbad was going to be the driver,” Kopelow said, while co-writer Heath Seifert added, “Yeah, it was important for us to have him participate in some way.” Director Phil Traill also said of the cameo, “It was great to be able to have him in it, and he was really stoked to be in it. He really enjoyed it.”
Maybe there’s still a chance that Mr. Wheat could appear on-screen one day. It’s been teased that there are already early plans in motion to make Good Burger 3, and the door would be open to include characters from the first film that didn’t return for the second. Traill said in a separate interview with Radio Times, “We had lots of people who wanted to be in the movie and lots didn’t work out because of dates. So hopefully they can come back in Good Burger 3.”
Good Burger 2 is now streaming on Paramount+.
