The bodies of two sisters have been found inside a unit in Canterbury in Sydney's west

The bodies of two sisters who were found decomposing in separate bedrooms in a Sydney unit may have been there for weeks before they were found as police admit they still have no idea how the pair died.

The women, believed to be foreign nationals aged 23 and 24-years-old, were found dead in the apartment on Canton Street, Canterbury in Sydney’s west after emergency services arrived at about 9.30am on Tuesday.

Police were called to the home by the building manager to perform a welfare check after the pair failed to pay rent for several weeks.

Detectives are still investigating how long the women’s bodies were inside their unit and said there were ‘no obvious signs of injury’.

NSW Police Detective Inspector Claudia Allcroft said while the investigation was in its early stages, the deaths of the sisters appeared to be suspicious.

‘There are no obvious signs of injury at this stage. However, we will know more once a post-mortem examination is completed tomorrow,’ she said.

A black BMW coupe covered in dust was removed from the garage of the apartment block on Wednesday afternoon.

Detective Inspector Allcroft said the bodies had been there ‘for some time’ but police could not yet determine for how long.

The women are yet to be identified.

‘It’s a very tragic scene when we go to any deceased persons, let alone two sisters who are deceased and unfortunately, at this stage, we don’t know why,’ Detective Inspector Allcroft said.

Residents were confronted by the tragic news on Wednesday morning as they strolled out of the building for work or to take their kids to school.

Mohamed Saeed, a night shift worker who lives on the first floor, was startled when he learned of the two bodies found on the same level.

‘I am just so sad for them,’ he told Daily Mail Australia.

Mother-of-two Kim Bui said she feared for her daughter’s safety when she saw police in her building.

‘I just want to keep my girls safe,’ she said. ‘I’m shaking, I’m scared, I’m worried. I’m just trying to protect my kids.’

Ms Bui said she did not know the women who died.

Another neighbour told Sunrise: ‘It’s sort of scary to know this is what’s happening in your own neighbourhood, we hear sirens go up and down all the time … and then to be so close to home, it’s quite scary.’
