Bowen Yang portraying George Santos as an NFL football reporter on Saturday Night Live

Saturday Night Live tore into lying Congressman George Santos in its cold open last night, portraying him as an out of his depth NFL sidelines reporter with a tall list of bogus football credentials to his name.

On the show, comedian Bowen Yang portrayed a Santos who claimed to have lead the league in rushing and passing to be the ‘first African-American quarterback to ever dunk a football,’ and called himself the ‘real Bo Jackson’ – an athlete known for making all-star teams in both professional football and baseball.

But the claims made by the sketch’s Santos came nowhere close to the absurdity of the real Republican’s lies, which, to name just a few, included claims that he was descended from Holocaust survivors, that his mother was in the World Trade Center south tower on 9/11, and that he saved thousands of pets through a charity that never existed.

SNL also jabbed at Santos’s virulent – and false – denial that he ever performed as drag queen in Brazil by having Yang strut on screen in a wig and dress while dancing to the NFL theme song.

The sketch started with a spoof of the NFL post-game panel discussing a game between the New York Giants and the Philadelphia Eagles.

After a bit of talk, the panelists then introduced a new reporter – Rep. George Santos – who they said submitted a resume so strong they ‘had to give him a shot.’

Some of his purported credentials included winning ‘more championships than Tom Brady, and being a ‘Heisman trophy winner.’

Yang then appeared wearing Santos signature sweater, blazer, and glasses, and said he was ‘here reporting live from the Super Bowl!’

SNL’s Santos then went on to make a series of ludicrous claims about his professional football playing history, and when asked where he played college football, responded ‘the university of college.’

He then went on to recap the Eagles-Giants game, claiming that he himself had lead the field in a series of impossible feats which included making ’12 touchdowns, 17 rebounds, and ten RBIs,’ and ’36 of 25 passes.’

He also added that he’d been given an Oscar award by the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The commentators then tried to pull Santos from the broadcast, saying ‘I’m being told some of those stats are not accurate and that you maybe didn’t play in the game at all.’

But the SNL Santos wasn’t done. After cutting to a different field reporter, he barged back onto the camera dressed in drag and introducing himself as ‘Kitara Ravache’ the name famously used by the real Santos when he performed in drag in Brazil.

SNL’s Santos/Raveche then went on to list his drag queen statistics, which included 26 ‘death drops,’ 19 ‘duck walks,’ and ‘infinity’ wigs snatched.

Next he proclaimed to have rewritten the NFL theme song – which he said he was allowed to do ‘because my mother died twice on 9/11.’

Santos then broke into dance as a Latin-infused NFL theme song began playing.

Though the many lies SNL’s Santos said were written for the show, the 9/11 jokes was based on claim Santos truly made – and was found later to have made up.

In a July 2021 tweet, Santos wrote that he was ‘blocking’ an account with the handle ‘9/11 was a victimless crime’ because his mother was a victim of the terrorist attack.

‘9/11 claimed my mother’s life… so I’m blocking so I don’t ever have to read this again,’ he wrote.

An obituary for Santos’ mother, however, stated she died in December 2016 – more than 15 years after the attack took place. He also confirmed the real date in a December 2021 tweet where he said: ‘December 23rd this year marks 5 years I lost my best friend and mentor. Mom you will live forever in my heart.’

Santos’ campaign website also stated his mother ‘survived the tragic events of September 11th’ in the South Tower office of the World Trade Center and died ‘a few years later when she lost her battle to cancer.’

And though records obtained by the New York Times showed Santos’ mother was a ‘domestic worker’ or ‘housekeeper,’ His campaign website described his mother as a top executive.

‘George’s work ethic comes from his mother, who came from nothing, but worked her way up to be the first female executive at a major financial institution,’ the website said.

On March 30, 2020, at the start of the U.S. coronavirus pandemic, an interview with Santos was published on YouTube titled ‘George Santos: A Corona Story.’ The video has since been set to private

In the video, according to Newsweek, Santos tells two men, one wearing a ‘Guns and Freedom’ hat and the other seated by a ‘Don’t Tread on Me’ flag, that he had ‘battled a brain tumor.’

Discussing his health Santos said: ‘I have an immunodeficiency and I also have acute chronic bronchitis. I also battled a brain tumor a couple of years ago and I had radiation done which really lowers your immunity in general.’

During an interview with WNYC, Santos alleged that four ‘people that work for me’ were killed during the June 2016 mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, which left 49 dead.

No connection has yet to be establish between any of the victims and Santos.

Santos said he founded a tax-exempt animal rights group, Friends of Pets United, which rescued more than 2,500 cats and dogs.

But no records relating to the group’s charitable status could be found by the IRS, nor could either the New York or New Jersey attorney general’s offices uncover documentation confirming Friends of Pets United had been registered as a charity.
