Star Wars: The Acolyte Gets Disney+ Premiere Date and First Poster Teasing the Sith's Return

Star Wars fans are about to receive their first look at The Acolyte.

The Star Wars X page unveiled an official poster for Lucasfilm’s upcoming High Republic series, confirming the show’s release date as June 4. The poster features a bloody smear on a wall trickling down into a lightsaber emitter, imitating the look of a Sith’s red blade with the tagline, “In an age of light, a darkness rises.” The X post also hyped up a potential trailer release with the one-word announcement “Tomorrow,” though whether it’ll be the same as the teaser shown at Star Wars Celebration Europe remains to be seen.

Star Wars: The High Republic Teases “Forbidden Jedi Romance”

The cover art and plot of Star Wars: The High Republic: Temptation of the Force feature new Jedi conflicts with more ties to prior book storylines.

Along with last year’s Star Wars Jedi: Survivor video game and Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures cartoon, The Acolyte is the latest Disney/Lucasfilm project to adapt the High Republic timeline outside books and comics. Set centuries before the prequel trilogy, these books introduced readers to a Jedi Order at the height of its power and a brand new cast of Jedi characters and non-Force wielders, all of whom find themselves tested by the the feared Nihil marauders and their cunning leader Marchion Ro. By comparison, showrunner Leslye Headland revealed last year that she pitched The Acolyte as “Frozen meets Kill Bill,” telling a story of “how the Sith infiltrated the Jedi” in the High Republic’s twilight years. Its cast, meanwhile, will include fan-favorite High Republic Jedi Vernestra Rwoh in a supporting role, played by Headland’s wife Rebecca Henderson.

Other The Acolyte character names haven’t been announced yet, outside of Vernestra and a Wookiee Jedi named Kelnacca. However, a rumor last year suggested that actor Amandla Stenberg will play twins “of Sith origin,” one of whom remained a Sith while the other was taken in by the Order. In a recent interview, Stenberg revealed what makes this Star Wars time period so unique, describing it as “a time of great peace, theoretically. It’s also a time of an institution, and it’s a time in which conceptions around the Force are very strict and I think what we’re trying to explore within our show is when an institution has a singular conception of how power can be used…we try to provide a lot of different perspectives and answers to that question. The idea is to kind of honor the ethos of Star Wars and ideas around the Force and also challenge them, hopefully harmoniously.”
