Steve Bruce has warned young adults about the dangers of not getting the Covid-19 vaccination after Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow spent a week in hospital.

The 30-year-old will miss Saturday’s opener at home to West Ham because of the after-effects of the virus, which he contracted earlier this summer.

And Bruce said: ‘For any young people out there who are not having this jab, here’s a prime example.

‘Karl found himself in hospital for the best part of a week, he’s dropped over a stone and a half in weight and it’s really knocked him around.

‘There’s a 30-year-old who was hospitalised by this thing – young, fit, healthy and it’s left him in a very, very poorly situation.

‘He’s getting bit by bit a little bit stronger, but it basically wiped him out, so just because you’re under the age of 30, you’re not immune to it.

‘There we have evidence in our squad of how sick even young people can get. We’ll give him as much time as he wants.’

Darlow’s absence and the continued recovery of Martin Dubravka from a foot injury means Freddie Woodman will make his Premier League debut against the Hammers.

The 24-year-old had been due to join Bournemouth on loan this summer before Newcastle pulled the plug in light of Dubravka’s problem.

Bruce added: ‘He’s waited patiently. He’s played on loan for the last two years, so it’s his big opportunity.’

Meanwhile, Newcastle have completed the £22million signing of Arsenal midfielder Joe Willock, although he was not registered in time for Saturday’s game.
