Hopper looking bruised and battered in Stranger Things

Stranger Things star David Harbour admits he originally thought that Jim Hopper’s apparent death in the Netflix series’ third season was for real.

Stranger Things star David Harbour recently revealed that he thought Jim Hopper died in Season 3.

Harbour discussed the former Hawkins police chief’s brush with death in an interview with Variety. “There were several times I thought he should die,” he said. “I certainly thought that in the beginning, because he was so destroyed and hellbent on destruction. Then when it seemed like he went in Season 3, I was happy for him. As he’s being resurrected as the man he wants to become [in Season 4], it would almost be nicer to keep him alive. Let’s see what they choose.”

The actor previously confirmed that he already knows how Hopper’s story will end in Stranger Things Season 5, after badgering series co-creators Matt and Ross Duffer for more information. Harbour added that the reason he needed to know the character’s final fate so badly was to that he could convincingly portray the arc involved. He also described Hopper’s closing moments as “quite moving, and quite beautiful” and praised the Duffers for the “responsible” way in which they tell the show’s story.

The Ongoing Evolution Of Stranger Things’ Jim Hopper

Harbour has been vocal about how much he enjoyed filming Stranger Things Season 4, especially since it allowed him to evolve Jim Hopper ahead of the show’s fifth and final season. “I like mixing it up,” he said. “There was a whole physical transformation that happens and a mental one. He’s a totally different guy. He really is stripped bare and to the core of who he is. I really like that.”

The star also recently gave the Duffers his blessing to recast the Hopper role, should they ever want to explore the ex-cop’s early years. “At this point, I think Hopper is a character that can exist independent of me,” Harbour said. “If they wanna go back in time, forward in time… I’d love to see another actor play Hopper, and see what they can bring to it.” He then identified Euphoria‘s Jacob Elordi as a potential candidate to portray the younger incarnation of Hopper.

Harbour revealed that Hopper very nearly did exist independently of him in a previous interview, noting that the Duffers nearly hired another actor to play one of Stranger Things‘ most pivotal roles. While admitting he doesn’t know the identity of the performer who almost landed the gig instead of him, Harbour nevertheless speculated that it was someone more high profile than himself.

All four seasons of Stranger Things are currently streaming on Netflix.
