Williams Claims Police Left Him Traumatized After Encounter
According to reports, the Fairfield High School sophomore says he was left traumatized after a violent confrontation with a police officer on campus during a response to a fight. Maurice told NBC Bay Area he didn’t even realize the person grabbing him was an officer at first.
“I didn’t see her coming or nothing like that. I just felt my hair getting pulled and I just felt my face getting hit, and I didn’t know it was an officer until I heard her yelling at me,” he said.
Maurice, who also plays football, shared that he’s been struggling to sleep and still suffers from headaches following the incident. The situation has quickly sparked outrage online and throughout the local community, especially after videos and witness accounts began circulating. Supporters of Maurice claim the teen was not actively fighting anyone and say the level of force used against him was completely unnecessary. Many are now calling for accountability while demanding transparency about exactly what happened in those moments on campus.
Williams’ Family Disputes Police Claims After Teen Released
Fairfield police say officers were responding to a fight at the school and alleged that Maurice resisted attempts to restrain him. Authorities stated that an officer used what they described as “distraction strikes” while trying to place him in handcuffs. Police also claimed Maurice struck an officer during the encounter, but students, community members, and his family strongly dispute that version of events.
Maurice’s family insists he never hit anyone and believes the officer crossed the line. His mother, Rhamesha Stevenson, says the incident has deeply changed her son emotionally. “I feel like that police officer took that joy from him,” Stevenson said. “He’s not the same kid, he is not. But I’m going to make sure, everything in my power, to make sure he gets that joy back.” Authorities took Maurice into custody after the incident, and his family says they later released him without filing any charges.
Officer Reassigned As Investigation Into Incident Continues
Fairfield police confirmed the officer involved has since been placed on administrative reassignment while an outside investigation is underway. Meanwhile, the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District released a statement saying, “As this is an active student matter and ongoing investigation, we are limited in what we are able to share at this time. What we can confirm is that the school principal has been in communication with the student’s family.” The district also stated that it remains focused on providing “culturally responsive care” to students and staff affected by the incident.
