Marvel Women Invisible Woman

Ever since their inception, The Fantastic Four have faced countless threats over the years, using their abilities as a team and bond as a family to defend the planet and make Earth a better place. Each member uses their fantastical abilities in their own unique ways and each member of the quartet is widely capable in their own right, but one teammate is frequently forgotten about in discussions of capability; that being none other than Sue Storm. Susan is the calm and collected mother of the team who may first come off as more of a supporting character, but Fantastic Four #47 (David Pepose, Juann Cabal, Jesus Aburtov, VC’s Joe Caramagna) shows exactly why you don’t mess with the matriarch of Marvel’s First Family.

When the Baxter Building comes under siege from Oubliette and The Midas Foundation, Sue is forced to channel her inner John McClane and fend off the villains all alone. Cut off from the rest of her teammates due to the ongoing Judgment Day event and its fallout, as well as Oubliette’s meddling from the inside, The Invisible Woman is given chance to show exactly why it’s a terrible idea to go after her or the people she cares about. In what seems like a version of Die Hard, readers are reminded of the potential and power that she possesses as she’s given a chance to shine without the rest of her family making her invisible.

With most of Earth’s heroes tied up dealing with the Progenitor and his judgment from the A.X.E. event currently happening in Marvel, Reed Richards takes it upon himself to enter his think-tank in order to come up with a solution to the Celestial problem. As Reed is cut off from the outside world in order to be alone with his thoughts, Oubliette and her goons use the opportunity to strike at The Fantastic Four while their guard is down. In order to accomplish her sinister plans and steal Reed’s intelligence, Oubliette separates the quartet, leaving Susan all alone to save the day. Backed into a corner in her own home, Sue shows readers exactly why she’s so dangerous.

She proceeds to take out multiple armed assailants all by herself even after they got the jump on her. Uttering the iconic Die Hard line “Yippe-Ki-Yay”, The Invisible Woman is able to take out every single one of the attackers with little to no effort. Being a genius herself, Sue is able to think quickly on her feet and comes up with creative ways to use her abilities to counter devices specifically tailored to bring her down. When one of the thugs starts to use thermal imaging goggles to counter her invisibility and has her at gunpoint, she actually is quick enough to create a force field that jams the gun’s magazine ejector. This short but stylized sequence highlights just how many applications Sue’s powers have and how she’s always able to find new ways to use them.

Even though The Invisible Woman was able to repel all of her attackers, Oubliette was still able to transport The Thing to an undisclosed location through the use of Mindless Ones, as well as use a force field to prevent Johnny Storm from re-entering The Baxter Building. With Reed in his think tank and oblivious to all outside stimuli and the rest of her team held up from coming to her rescue, Sue really does become a facsimile of John McClane, becoming a one-woman army on a war path to protect her husband. Oubliette was able to get the jump on the foursome, but going against Susan is a mistake the villain will be sure to regret. Mrs. Fantastic will do everything in her power to protect her family at all costs, and she’s definitely got the strength and the smarts to do it.

Attacking The Fantastic Four takes guts, extreme power, or stupidity, and seeing as The Midas Foundation is deciding to face off against Sue, it’s looking like the latter. Being one of the most powerful women in all of Marvel is no small feat, and The Invisible Woman undeniably fits that description. Her family and home threatened, Sue squaring off against an entire enemy force all by herself and even though she’s outnumbered, she’s far from out-gunned. Incredibly smart and wildly capable, Mrs. Fantastic is a nightmare come true for someone like Oubliette, and with her husband’s safety on the line, The Midas Foundation will likely become invisible itself as Sue wipes them off the map.
