Enjoy the first taste of summer! Temperatures could edge towards 20C next week as the sunshine finally arrives from today after days of wind and heavy rain

Brits could be set to enjoy their first taste of summer as temperatures could ‘creep towards 20C’ early next week after days of wind heavy rain.

Today could spell the end of the wet and wintry weather, with many areas of the UK predicted to be dry, bright and sunny.

And while it could rain overnight, warmer temperatures could be on their way into next week.

‘So just how warm are we talking?’ asked ITV weather presenter Phillipa Drew. ‘It looks as though afternoon temperatures should be comfortably into the mid- perhaps high-teens. Locally we could even creep towards 20 Celsius early next week.’

This makes a change from rainfall which saw Ladies Day at Aintree become a shower of plastic bags and umbrellas while a Sainsbury’s van got stuck due to flooding in Essex.

According to the Met Office parts of eastern and southeastern England will see the best of the sunshine today.

It will be cloudier in the west with a little rain at times, mainly in the hills, but it will be warmer than yesterday.

There will be a fair amount of cloud for many areas overnight, but also some clear spells, with patchy rain and drizzle over western hills.

And tomorrow is set to be mainly fine and dry in the south east, however North Sea coastal area could be cool and cloudy.

Later in the week, it will feel pleasantly warm both in the sun and out of the breeze, but rain could creep back by Thursday.

Regarding the hotter temperatures, Ms Drew added that while the days could feel warmer, Spring is notorious for its large temperature differences between daytime and nighttime.

‘With that in mind, the early mornings will still be on the chilly side and the east coast will struggle with an easterly breeze bringing in air off the relatively cool sea,’ she said.

Met Office spokesman Stephen Dixon said: ‘Things are due to settle down for many areas. Temperatures are turning much milder through the weekend.

‘The theme for next week is it’ll be mostly dry with temperatures above average and locally well above average in some spots.

‘After what’s been an unsettled spell, it will finally feel like we are getting into the later part of spring, towards more of a summery regime. The temperatures will feel quite pleasant.’

During Storm Noa earlier this week, gusts of up to 96mph were recorded as the high winds brought down trees across swathes of Britain, causing power cuts and blocking railway lines.

The Met Office says Thursday onwards could see continued dry and sunny spells.

It will become cloudier through Thursday and into the weekend, with an increasing chance of showers, most likely towards the south.

Most areas will feel reasonable in shelter and sunshine, though southern and eastern coasts are likely to feel cooler in fresh easterly winds.

Temperatures are likely to be rather warm towards the end of the month, especially in the west and northwest.

However, some eastern coasts may stay cooler, and perhaps locally chilly overnight in sheltered parts.
