Welcome to the RedState Weekly Briefing — where we take a quick look at the week’s most viewed stories in case you missed any of them. What do you suppose caught people’s attention in this latest whirlwind week? Grab a cup of coffee (or something stronger if you’re so inclined), and sit down with this 21st Century Weekend Edition of your favorite (online) publication — here we go!
#1 – Democrats Learn What Consequences Are, and They Aren’t Happy About It — by Bonchie
You see, in life, when you do things, those things often produce specific repercussions. We call those “consequences,” and you don’t get to call a timeout from them the moment they arrive. Democrats seem to be under the impression that they can set new standards only to revert when those new standards devour them.
Take the recent battle over redistricting, which has seen over 50 left-wing Texas legislators flee their state to stop the passing of a new congressional map that would eliminate five Democrat-held seats. For decades, the Democratic Party has used state power to draw some of the most gerrymandered maps in the nation. Some examples include Illinois, Maryland, California, New York, Massachusetts, and New Mexico. But when Texas Republicans decided they wanted to stop playing the game with their hands tied behind their back, Democrats screamed bloody murder.
#2 – Gavin Newsom Gets Terrible News About His Plan to Redistrict, After His Very Public Meltdown — by Bonchie
Admittedly, poll results can be massaged, but in this case, it’s hard to argue that left-wing Politico was out to benefit Republicans. The wording of the questions was also not ambiguous. It specifically mentions Newsom’s gambit to redistrict in response to Republicans. Still, respondents came nowhere close to providing the necessary majorities that would be needed in a special election to undo the state’s redistricting process.
I’m shocked. I thought for sure that Newsom shouting in all-caps would be effective, but here we are.
All of this makes the governor look even more pathetic. He doesn’t even have the ear of his deep blue state’s electorate on an issue he spent the last two weeks posturing over, writing checks with his mouth that his political ability can’t cash.
#3 – Left-Wingers Staged a Protest Against Trump’s D.C. Crime Crackdown, and Then Something Shocking Happened — by Bonchie
“Trump must go now,” the banner reads, and he’s surely done for now. I hear he’s already tendered his resignation in the face of such an effective gambit. The libs have done it again.
Seriously, though, if you know anything about that part of town, you know that Northwest D.C. is where most of the white-bread NIMBYs live. It’s generally considered the “safest” quadrant of the city, though that’s a relative term. That means the people less likely to be victims of violent crime are protesting against the president for trying to stop violent crime in higher crime areas. Isn’t that nice of them?
But at the very moment they were marching toward 14th Street NW to show their disdain for the orange man, something shocking happened. Just a few blocks away in Logan Circle, a person was (presumably) murdered.
#4 – George Will Reveals Jaw-Dropping Take on NYC’s Zohran Mamdani to Bill Maher — by Nick Arama
I understand his point, that he thinks it will teach people who don’t understand now.
The problem is that if Mamdani wins, it means a lot of suffering, and not just for the people in New York. Because of New York’s importance, it’s going to lead to more leftism infecting and hurting people. And it’s silly to think it would be “confined.” It’s like a virus – if you let it live, it spreads.
We don’t need another example of socialism’s failure – we already have had plenty of examples. When it fails again and they don’t give up power, then what? It’s real people, it’s not just an esoteric “experiment” without consequences. Mamdani and others would argue away the bad results as the fault of someone else, just as we saw Biden do. People on the left will believe it, just as they fall for whatever pablum the left pushes now.
#5 – Greg Abbott Ends Gavin Newsom and Fleeing Texas Democrats With Hilarious, Brutal Message — by Katie Jerkovich
“Oh, my God,” Abbott replied, before breaking into laughter. “Give me a break. For one, there’s so many things wrong with that. In Texas, for us to redraw congressional lines and make sure that people in Texas are going to have the ability to vote for the Republican candidate of their choice in these congressional seats, all it requires is for the governor to call a special session on it and for a majority of the Texas House and Senate to vote on it.”
“[Newsom] is kind of like someone who shows up to a gunfight but forgot to bring the bullets because he doesn’t have any bullets to shoot in this fight,” he added. “Whereas Texas has plenty of bullets to shoot — to make sure that we will maintain a congressional district in Texas that’s going to be more Republican, more representative of the values and votes in our state.”
