Comedians getting heckled is something all of them will experience at some point, but some comments may sting a bit more than others. For Jerry Seinfeld, one that stands out as the most bothersome goes back more than three decades.
During an interview for In Depth With Graham Bensinger (per THR), Seinfeld commented on getting heckled during a stand-up comedy show in Boston in 1993. The Seinfeld star shared how he delivered a bit about weddings that had taken him a long time to perfect, which meant testing out the material in different ways at previous shows. Seinfeld felt like he nailed it during the Boston show, but then a heckler called him out in a way that got under the famous funnyman’s skin.

Jerry Seinfeld Doesn’t Regret How Sitcom Ended, Reveals Favorite Series Finale
Comedian Jerry Seinfeld shares that he doesn’t regret how his beloved NBC sitcom ended before revealing his favorite series finale of all time.
“I had this amazing bit about weddings,” Seinfeld explained. “It was fantastic. It was so long. It covered everything. And I worked on it and worked on it and worked on it. It takes me forever… I start into the bit and somebody yells, ‘Heard it.’ And that was a tough one. I still think about it. It was mean. It was true.”
Jerry Seinfeld Spent Years Working on Certain Bits
Seinfeld shared how it’s common for comedians to sometimes spend years working on material until they find the perfect delivery that works the best. He said how there was less awareness of just how much work goes into a comedian’s routine three decades ago, and for that reason, he doesn’t feel like comedians get heckled in this way much anymore in 2024.

How the Curb Your Enthusiasm Finale Fixes Seinfeld’s Controversial Ending
Curb Your Enthusiasm’s series finale finds a clever way to redeem Seinfeld’s polarizing ending.
“I think now audiences are a little more sophisticated,” Seinfeld said. “These are pieces that we work on for months and months and months; you don’t do it once and works. Every scene you see in a movie, they did that 18 times — one time it was good. Same with comedy. I’ve done it 100 times, now I finally got it.”
Seinfeld’s new film, Unfrosted, is directly based on one of his most famous stand-up comedy bits. The Netflix movie is a fictionalized version of the breakfast battle between Kellogg’s and Post Cereal in 1963. Seinfeld gathered up many big-name stars to be a part of the cast, which includes Hugh Grant playing Frosted Flakes mascot Tony the Tiger. Other cast members include Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Amy Schumer, Peter Dinklage, Dan levy, James Marsden, and Christian Slater.
Seinfeld’s Unfrosted will premiere on Netflix on May 3, 2024.
