Viewers of The 1% Club were left scratching their heads on Saturday after a particularly tricky final maths question took out three of the four finalists.
As its name suggests, the show is centred around finding the top 1% of players through a series of quiz questions.
Those who reach the top 1% then battle it out for a cash prize of up to £100,000.
On Saturday’s show, however, this meant quickly analysing a picture of squares within squares and correctly working out the total number present within just 30 seconds.
Lee Mack asked: ‘How many squares are there in this image?’
Can you work it out? Three of the four finalists were unable to – in fact, they found the question so confusing that all four gave different answers.

Following the extremely tricky question – which had a correct answer of 46 squares – viewers were quick to take to social media to express their frustration at its difficulty.
Admitting defeat, viewers wrote on X: ‘No way I would have gotten that one.’;
‘That last question was a liberty. I thought I did something getting 32 !!! #The1PercentClub.’;
‘OH NO! I MISSED 4 SQUARES NOOOOOOOOOOO #The1PercentClub.’
Explaining their answer, a viewer who managed to get the right answer wrote: ’46 (16 small squares, 16 1×1 squares, 9 2×2 sqaures, 4 3×3 squares, 1 4×4 big square).’
Another viewer who got the correct answer, meanwhile, admitted that it was a close call.
They wrote: ‘Only just [got the answer] in the end…. Changed my answer with a few seconds spare. Saw a few more that I’d of otherwised missed and lost out on. #The1PercentClub.’

He said: ‘It’s very nice. For me, because we did the pilot before Covid, it’s been around forever, but it’s new on telly.
‘People love a quiz show.’
Ahead of the 2025 series, Lee said he’s surprised that personally hasn’t made a massive error yet, joking: ‘Let’s be honest, the fact that I haven’t accidentally given a hundred grand to the wrong person or read out the answer instead of the question is as much a surprise to me as it is to everyone else.
‘I’m really delighted that ITV is risking me steering this ship once again. I can’t wait to discover more of the nation’s brainboxes.’
