The Exorcist: Believer Sets Digital Release Following Negative Critical Reception

Universal Pictures and Blumhouse’s latest supernatural thriller The Exorcist: Believer will soon be released on digital, after over two weeks since its theatrical debut.

Despite having a promising box office performance during its opening weekend, The Exorcist: Believer wasn’t able to impress critics, who believed that the horror sequel didn’t manage to live up to the quality and expectations of William Friedkin’s 1973 classic. At the time of writing, the film currently holds a 23% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 206 reviews. Because of this, it seems like Universal Pictures is eager to see how well it would perform on streaming platforms, as the studio decided to give the film an early digital release.

According to DiscussingFilm, The Exorcist: Believer will reportedly be available to rent or own later this month, starting on Oct. 24 on digital and VOD platforms for the retail price of $29.99. The horror sequel was directed by David Gordon Green (Halloween trilogy), who co-wrote the movie with Peter Sattler. Leading the cast are Lidya Jewett and Olivia Marcum as they portray the role of Angela and Katherine, two best friends who got possessed after mysteriously disappearing for three days. Joining them are Leslie Odom Jr. as Angela’s father Victor Fielding, Ann Dowd as Ann, Jennifer Nettles as Katherine’s mother Miranda, Norbert Leo Butz as Katherine’s father Tony, and Okwui Okpokwasili as Dr. Beehibe.

The film also features the long-awaited return of Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn, who is reprising her iconic role as Chris MacNeil from 1973’s original Exorcist movie. In the sequel, Chris MacNeil will be reintroduced to the franchise as an expert on exorcism after writing several books about her and Regan’s traumatic experience. In a previous interview, Green addressed Burstyn’s future in the franchise, revealing that her fate still “depends if she dies or not, in terms of the character,” but admitted having “those kinds of conversations” about it.

What’s Next for The Exorcist Franchise?

After the theatrical release of The Exorcist: Believer, Blumhouse will move on to the development of its next installment The Exorcist: Deceiver, which is still scheduled to arrive in theaters on April 18, 2025. Further details about its plot and characters are still being kept under wraps. It is also unclear whether Green and the cast of Believer would also be returning for the 2025 sequel. In a previous interview, Green teased what’s next for The Exorcist franchise, revealing that his in-depth research about religion and possession led him to discover “infinite paths” that the franchise could potentially go to.

“There are so many religions and perspectives of possession that I uncovered in the research of this movie that there are just infinite paths you could take,” Green said. “We’ve got a roadmap of what we’d like to do for two more movies. We’re just waiting to see if the audiences, the studios, the world around us will respond to this film in the way that we hope, and then we’ll take it from there.”

The Exorcist: Believer is now in theaters worldwide.
