Harry Potter is one of the most influential franchises of modern times. The books inspired a new generation to read, and the movies earned a place in audiences’ hearts. However, like every movie adaptation of a beloved book series, Harry Potter didn’t come without its mistakes. Some of the changes and directorial choices in the Harry Potter movies divided fans and are still a topic of heavy discussion today, like the change in Harry Potter’s eye color, or how the Polyjuice Potion works.
While it is never possible to adapt every detail of a book into a movie, some of the differences between the Harry Potter movies and the books were glaringly obvious. Overall, the Harry Potter movies made many mistakes. The change in directors played a factor in these mistakes, as some minor details seemed to lack continuity or were changed in the next adaptation.
Updated on March 8, 2024, by Florencia Aberastury: There are many mistakes in the Harry Potter movies, from changes regarding a character’s age, background or personality, to the obvious inconsistencies between the different installments in the movie saga. This article has been updated to include more information about these Harry Potter movie mistakes, as well as to bring the article up to current CBR standards.
10 Casting Alan Rickman Meant Many Adult Characters Were Aged Up
Aging Up Marauder Era Characters In Harry Potter Potentially Muddied the Timeline
10 Harsh Realities Of Being Harry Potter’s Severus Snape
Although Severus Snape played a huge part in Harry Potter and the Battle of Hogwarts, many harsh realities come with being this Slytherin wizard.
Harry Potter’s parents died when Harry was only one year old. In the Harry Potter books, James and Lily Potter were around 21 years old when they passed away. Their deaths were especially tragic because they were so young. However, Geraldine Somerville (who played Lily) was 34 in The Philosopher’s Stone, and Adrian Rawlins (who played James) was 43. This was an obvious inconsistency for book fans.
- In Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Severus Snape was around 32 years old. However, Alan Rickman was over 50 years old.
- David Thewlis, who played Remus Lupin, and Gary Oldman, who played Sirius Black, were also older than their book counterparts.
- Remus Lupin would’ve been around 33 when he began teaching at Hogwarts, and Sirius was about 34 when he escaped Azkaban. However, both actors were about 10 years older than the characters they portrayed.
After Alan Rickman was cast to play Snape, other characters like Sirius, Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew had to be played by older actors, as they were all in the same year at Hogwarts. And while many fans will agree that these actors did an excellent job with the characters, aging the characters was a mistake that changed a key detail in the Harry Potter saga. By making the marauders older, as well as Snape, the adaptations failed to put into perspective just how young they were during the First and Second Wizarding Wars.
9 Ron Weasley Was Relegated To The Comic-Relief Character
The Films Often Made Ron Seem Like He Wasn’t Smart Enough to Keep Up with Harry & Hermione
Ron Weasley suffered greatly in the Harry Potter movie adaptations, which pigeonholed him as a “funny and unintelligent” friend. Even if he could be silly, Ron was still smart, loyal, and a great friend. He always stood up for Harry and Hermione and welcomed them into his family with open arms. His loyalty to Harry and Hermione is proven time and time again in the books, from sacrificing himself during the chess game when he was only a child, to defending Hermione against bullies like Draco and Snape.
- In Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone book, it’s Hermione who gets flustered when they encounter Devil’s Snare, and Ron reminds her that she can conjure up fire.
- In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Ron is quick to show his support and loyalty to Harry, making sure Harry knows Ron and Hermione will be there by his side when hunting the Horcruxes, something the movies left out.
Some of Ron’s lines and scenes from the books were given to Hermione in the movies, which took away some pivotal moments for Ron. His scenes where he defends Hermione or stands by Harry’s side were ignored in the movies, which made him lack depth as a character. Changing Ron so much upset book fans and ignored the character’s potential, and even made some viewers question Ron and Hermione’s relationship.
8 The Movies Skipped Most Of Voldemort’s Backstory
Tom Marvolo Riddle Had a Colorful and Dark History That was Overlooked to Focus Solely On His Malice
While The Half-Blood Prince touches on some details, a lot of Voldemort’s backstory is left a mystery. Most of the information regarding his family history, his childhood, and the prophecy are left out. Voldemort’s dislike of Muggles that comes from the hatred he harbored for his own father isn’t explained in depth, yet this is a crucial part of Voldemort’s backstory that helps fans understand his motivations.
- The Harry Potter movies never explain how Voldemort’s mother fell in love with a Muggle boy, and how she used her powers as a witch to make him fall in love with her.
- The adaptations also lack any information about the Gaunts, Voldemort’s family from his mother’s side, who play a big role in the hunt for the Horcruxes.
In leaving out this important backstory, Voldemort was not a complex villain anymore. The main theme in the book series is about “love” being the strongest magic out there, and why Voldemort could never understand that. Voldemort’s backstory explained his disdain for it and marked all the differences between him and Harry. Unfortunately, the movies suffered without these details.
7 Harry Potter Ignored Most Of The Rules Of The Magical World
The Wizarding World Was Distinctly Set Apart from the Muggle World, and the Movies Often Ignored That
10 Questionable Things in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter was an enchanting one, but it had its fair share of questionable elements.
In the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, some rules and customs are followed. The biggest one is that underage wizards can’t perform magic outside of school. The movies ignored this when it suited the Golden Trio, even if it created some contradictions and left viewers confused. In the beginning of Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry does magic at home, but he’s later scared that the Ministry will expel him for doing a different spell outside of school.
- In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry receives a warning from the Ministry about using magic outside Hogwarts. However, the Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban movie starts with Harry using a spell outside Hogwarts to do his homework.
- Pure-blood wizards have a hard time dressing like Muggles, something that creates several funny moments in the Harry Potter book saga. In the movies, however, wizards wear Muggle clothes most of the time, and students even wear Muggle clothes while at Hogwarts.
The Golden Trio also wear “Muggle” clothes at Hogwarts, something that is incorrect and would send Professor McGonagall to the infirmary. Part of the magic of Harry Potter comes from these rules, which transport audiences to this fictional universe.
6 Snape’s Past Relationship With James Potter Isn’t Detailed
The Films Didn’t Delve Nearly As Deep Into James Potter & Severus Snape’s Rivalry As They Could Have
In Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Harry is wary of Professor Snape, even suspecting him of trying to steal the Philosopher’s Stone. However, audiences soon learn that it wasn’t the case, as Snape was actually trying to protect Harry. This comes as a shock, even to Harry, who thinks that Professor Snape hates him.
- In Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Harry learns that his father James once saved Snape’s life. However, this isn’t mentioned in the movies.
- In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, fans learn that the Marauders played a prank on Snape, who wanted to see why Lupin was taken to the Shrieking Shack all the time. However, as James knew Remus would be in his werewolf form if Snape went to investigate, James stopped Snape from reaching the Shack and effectively saved his life.
The Harry Potter movies somewhat discuss Snape’s feelings toward James and Harry Potter, but it’s not explored. The enmity between James and Snape is far more detailed in the books, and it explains why Snape still dislikes James after all this time, even if James is mostly portrayed as the good guy in the saga. James saving Snape’s life is never mentioned either, even if it’s a crucial detail.
5 Harry Potter Doesn’t Actually Have His Mother’s Eyes In the Movies
Plenty of Characters In Both the Books and the Films Pointed Out Harry’s Likeness to James & Lily
Several characters tell Harry he has his mother’s eyes. In the Harry Potter books, they both have green eyes. Daniel Radcliffe, however, couldn’t use contacts to change his eye color, and editing them wouldn’t have been realistic. Therefore, fans see his natural blue eyes throughout the movies.
- Throughout the Harry Potter saga, many characters, like Remus Lupin, Sirus, and even Snape, constantly mention that Harry looks like James, yet he has Lily’s eyes.
This wouldn’t be an issue if Lily Potter had blue eyes in the films as well, but the actor who plays young Lily during the flashbacks in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 has much darker eyes. This is even more contradictory because Snape tells Harry he has Lily’s eyes minutes before audiences see these flashbacks of a young Lily. This was a glaring inconsistency that confused fans, and a Harry Potter mistake that could’ve been easily fixed.
4 Having Different Directors in Harry Potter Allowed for More Inconsistencies
10 Most Complicated Harry Potter Potions
Harry, Ron, and Hermione drank powerful magical potions during their time at Hogwarts, which happened to be very complicated and difficult to make.
The constant change in directors in the Harry Potter movies hurt the franchise in a big way. Several rules changed throughout the franchise, although it’s unclear whether these inconsistencies were adaptation problems or the result of each director’s vision. The Polyjuice Potion sometimes changes the voice of whoever takes it, and it sometimes doesn’t. Expelliarmus is a disarming charm that, in some movies, sends a wizard flying through the air.
- The first two Harry Potter films, Philosopher’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets, saw the students wearing their uniforms at Hogwarts. In Prisoner of Azkaban, however, students were mostly in Muggle clothes while at Hogwarts.
- When Harry and Ron turn into Crabbe and Goyle with the Polyjuice Potion, their original voices remain. However, in Goblet of Fire, when Barty Crouch Jr. uses the Polyjuice Potion, his voice also changes.
Many fans disliked David Yates’ adaptation of Half-Blood Prince, which added details like the Burning of the Burrows and overlooked some crucial book storylines, including important details about Voldemort’s backstory. Audiences were left with clashing aesthetic choices, conflicting rules, and sometimes even different uniforms and styles for the characters in every Harry Potter movie.
3 Voldemort Explodes To Ashes After He Dies, Negating a Very Important Message
Despite Being Incredibly Powerful, Voldemort Was Still Human In the End
The Battle of Hogwarts was drastically changed for the Harry Potter movies, but the biggest mistake was changing Voldemort’s death scene. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 decided to go with a more visually impactful scene, even if it conflicted with what’s described in the books. For many, this change was a big mistake in the Harry Potter movie, as it changed the meaning of Voldemort’s death.
- After Voldemort dies during the Battle of Hogwarts, his body was removed from the Great Hall to another room.
Voldemort meeting his end and dying just like any other human is a relevant element in the story. It showed readers that after everything he’d done, he was still just a man. Having Voldemort turn to ashes in the Harry Potter movies negates this concept and gave him more power and dignity than he deserved. This removed a crucial part of his character and an important message in the story.
2 Harry Potter Never Explained The Marauder’s Map’s Origin
Much of the Marauder-era History from the Books Was Left Out of the Films, Including How the Map Came Into Being
Leaving out the Marauder’s Map’s origin in the movie adaptations was one of the most crucial mistakes in Harry Potter. In Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry learns that his father James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew created the map together. The nicknames of Moody, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs relate to each character’s animal form. The Marauders became animagi during their time at Hogwarts, so they could be with Lupin when he was in his werewolf form.
- In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry is surprised that Lupin knows how to use the Marauder’s Map. Harry later learns Lupin helped create the map.
The Marauders being animagi and how they created the map are part of their interesting backstory in Harry Potter. Additionally, Harry owning another artifact that belonged to his father, as well as learning James was a bit of a rebel while at Hogwarts, is extremely meaningful to him. The Marauders and their map weren’t fleshed out enough for movie fans, which was a huge disappointment.
1 Harry Never Fixes His Wand In The End of The Deathly Hallows Part 2
Fans Were Left Wondering What Harry Did for a Wand After Breaking the Elder Wand
Harry Potter: The 10 Most Powerful Wands In The Series, Ranked
Harry Potter features some impressive magic and spells that would not be possible without the powerful wands present throughout the franchise.
One of the biggest mistakes in Harry Potter that left a lot of fans furious was that Harry never fixed his wand with the Elder Wand. This is important because he decided not to keep the most powerful wand in the world, instead choosing to keep his own wand. However, his wand broke in a prior scene, leaving Harry upset and wandless during a critical time.
- Harry’s wand breaks accidentally when Harry and Hermione are escaping Bathilda Bagshot’s home.
- When they are imprisoned at Malfoy Manor, Harry is able to steal Draco’s wand.
- Harry uses Draco’s wand during the Battle of Hogwarts, and later fixes his own wand with the Elder Wand.
Harry Potter’s wand was unique and had proven that it could do magic like no other. Harry choosing to fix his wand instead of keeping the legendary and powerful Elder Wand is an important moment for the saga, and for Harry’s character development. It was one last difference between Harry and Voldemort and truly conveyed how much Harry had grown. However, the films only showed him destroying the Elder Wand and Harry never fixed his own, which created a minor plot hole for the storyline, as this would either leave Harry with Draco’s wand, or without a wand at all.
