The Sandman co-creator Neil Gaiman confirms that Season 2 will include the showdown between Dream and Lucifer teased in the first season.

The following contains spoilers for The Sandman Season 1, currently streaming on Netflix.

The Sandman co-creator Neil Gaiman just promised fans that the Netflix fantasy series’ second season will adapt the rematch between Morpheus and Lucifer Morningstar depicted in the original DC comics.

Gaiman discussed the impending showdown between the king of dreams and the ruler of Hell teased in The Sandman‘s Season 1 finale, in an interview with Newsweek. “[W]e just carry on with this story [in Season 2],” he said. “That’s kind of marvelous that anybody who has seen Season 1… when we tell them that Season 2 [is] going to begin with the big Lucifer-Morpheus rematch they get very excited. Little do they know what’s going to happen and that they are simply not prepared for where it’s gonna go.”

Executive producer David S. Goyer, who co-developed the series along with Gaiman and Allan Heinberg, previously confirmed that scripts for The Sandman Season 2 are currently being written. Goyer added that these scripts have been less challenging to write thanks to the amount of exposition already covered in Season 1. “In some ways, it’s easier because we’ve educated the audience to the basic ideas,” he said. “We’ve shown how the dreaming life can affect the waking world. With that groundwork done, the show can now build on those themes.” The Sandman hasn’t officially been renewed for a second season, however, and Netflix is reportedly waiting to see how the first 10 episodes perform before greenlighting more.

Is More Sandman Headed to Netflix?

The show has cleared at least one hurdle on the road to renewal, though, after garnering a mostly positive reception from critics so far. Reviews of The Sandman praised the comic book adaptation’s cast, production design, visual effects, and fidelity to its source material. It remains to be seen whether The Sandman‘s critical success will translate into strong viewership figures, which will ultimately decide whether Netflix commissions one or more additional seasons. The streaming platform recently canceled another supernatural-themed series, vampire teen drama First Kill, after only one season because it failed to meet key thresholds around the viewing and completion of episodes.

For his part, Gaiman seems optimistic that The Sandman Season 2 will happen, and the celebrated scribe is already talking spinoffs. Gaiman recently voiced support for a side series headlined by Jenna Coleman’s Johanna Constantine, an occult detective who uses magic to investigate her otherworldly cases.
