Peter Dinklage will play a new incarnation of Toxie in the upcoming Toxic Avenger movie, but if he’d passed on the role, it could have gone to Paul Walter Hauser.
Speaking with ComicBook.com, Paul Walter Hauser revealed how he was one of the names up for the role of Toxie in the new Toxic Avenger remake. While Peter Dinklage was the top choice, Hauser was on deck to potentially take over if the Game of Thrones star couldn’t do it. While the Toxie casting worked out, Hauser was able to read the screenplay, which he praised as “incredible.” While he isn’t in the film personally, the Cobra Kai actor is also eager for people to see this new take on The Toxic Avenger when it comes out.
The Toxic Avenger Reboot Sets New Franchise Record at Rotten Tomatoes
The early reviews for Peter Dinklage’s Toxic Avenger reboot separate it from its predecessors in a major way.
“I read the screenplay for it,” Hauser said. “I was like on a list of people, if Peter Dinklage gets COVID, I’ll jump [in]. I was one of 20 people or whatever. But the script is amazing. I love Macon [Blair], the writer-director, and the cast… In the world where a lot of superhero movies start to feel kind of factory made, that looks like one that is from a singular mind and a really creative, kind of edgy space. So I’m certainly excited to see it.”
Jacob Tremblay, who co-stars with Hauser in Netflix’s Orion and the Dark, is also a part of the remake’s cast. The young actor also teased to ComicBook.com about the film, “Yeah, it’s, it’s an insane cast. I mean, that was such a fun movie. I mean, it’s incredible. I think people are gonna have such a fun time watching that. It’s something else. I’m super excited for people to see it.”
Toxic Avenger Director Compares the Reboot’s Violence to Itchy & Scratchy Cartoons
The new Toxic Avenger movie features overly-violent scenes reminiscent of Itchy & Scratchy cartoons from The Simpsons.
The Toxic Avenger Gets Reimagined by Macon Blair
Macon Blair is the writer and director of the new Toxic Avenger, though it’s produced by Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz, the filmmakers behind the 1984 original from Troma Entertainment. Peter Dinklage leads the cast as Winston Gooze, a health club janitor whose exposure to toxic chemicals transforms him into a monster vigilante. The film also stars Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Jane Levy, Kevin Bacon, and an unrecognizable Elijah Wood.
Paul Walter Hauser may have missed out on the role, but he’s found success elsewhere. For his performance in the Apple TV+ miniseries Black Bird, Hauser just recently won a Primetime Emmy Award along with a Golden Globe. He previously appeared in the movies BlacKkKlansman, Da 5 Bloods, Cruella, and Richard Jewell.
