Three teenagers have been killed and another is fighting for his life after the car they were travelling in left the road and smashed into a tree.
West Yorkshire Police said it was called to the scene of a single vehicle collision involving a Seat Ibiza on Bramley Lane in West Bretton, six miles south of Wakefield, at 8.30pm on Friday.
An 18-year-old driver and two 19-year-old passengers were pronounced dead at the scene, while two other men were taken to hospital. One of the survivors is critically injured, the force said today.
An investigation has been launched into the cause of the tragedy, with members of the public who may have seen the car beforehand, or who have relevant dashcam footage, asked to come forward.
West Yorkshire Police senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector James Entwistle said: ‘This is a tragic incident which has resulted in the loss of three lives and fourth person suffering critical injuries.
‘Our thoughts go out to the families of those involved who we are working with to provide support.’
‘Our specialist collision investigators are establishing the circumstances surrounding this fatal collision and I would urge anyone who may have seen the car involved or who may have dashcam or other video footage that will help our enquiries to please contact us.’
