Avatar: The Last Airbender is an exciting animated fantasy series featuring a colorful cast of wonderful and exciting characters, ranging from Avatar Aang himself and his friends to compelling villains such as the scarred Prince Zuko and his scheming sister, Azula. Most of Avatar’s main characters get plenty of screen time, but a few actually do not.

Some of Avatar’s side characters are nearly as compelling as the main ones, but they only appear in a few scenes each and don’t get the development they are due. Plenty of these characters are owed some more screen time so fans can enjoy watching their character arcs unfold or at least watch these characters go on more adventures.

10 Cabbage Man Is Just Too Funny

One of the best running jokes in Avatar: The Last Airbender is the fact that a certain vegetable merchant has terrible luck when the Gaang is around. More than once, this poor fellow’s cabbage cart got wrecked by flying debris or bender chaos, and he loudly bemoans the loss of his cabbages.

All this came to a head when Cabbage Man’s cabbage cart got wrecked one last time in the massive Ba Sing Se, and he lamented, “Oh, forget it!” He vanished from Avatar: The Last Airbender after that, but fans would love it if he was seen again conducting normal business.

9 Pakku Only Fought Twice In The Series

Near the end of Book One: Water, the Gaang finally reached the Northern Water Tribe and met Pakku, an elderly bender who followed his native tribe’s strict, traditionalist ways. That soon changed, though, and after battling Katara, he agreed to teach her waterbending alongside Aang.

Pakku later appeared again after marrying Katara and Sokka’s grandmother, Kanna, who was actually an old flame of Pakku’s. Now, he’s part of the family, and he also fought the Fire Nation’s forces as a loyal member of the White Lotus. Avatar fans need more of that.

8 Guru Pathik Was Pretty Cool

At one point, Aang departed Ba Sing Se to meet the reclusive Guru Pathik, an elderly expert on all things chakra. Aang hadn’t even heard of inner chakras until then, so he learned all the basics from the wise and compassionate Pathik. Aang unlocked most of his chakras and later managed to unlock them all.

Guru Pathik is a unique character in Avatar — a charming and wise mentor who knew how to dive deep into Aang’s psyche and figure out how to help the boy reach his true potential. It’s too bad he only appeared once as a borderline plot device. Fans would love it if Aang could train with him one more time.

7 June Only Appeared Twice In The Story

The character June is a young woman who rides atop a fearsome shirshu to track down absolutely any bounty in the world. No matter how distant or how stealthy the target may be, June can and will find them and deliver them to the client. Zuko and Sokka each hired her in the story of Avatar for this very reason.

June is a cool and stylish character who only appeared twice in Avatar: The Last Airbender, with her main appearance being in “Bato of the Water Tribe.” In her second appearance, she tried and failed to find the missing Aang, and with that, she disappeared. Fans find June too interesting of a character to not wonder what she’s up to.

6 Piandao Barely Did Anything

In Book Three: Fire, Sokka trained with the sword under master Piandao’s tutelage. Piandao, voiced by Robert Patrick of Terminator 2 fame, was a generous and smart teacher who totally reinvented Sokka’s fighting style while not discriminating against a Water Tribe native like Sokka.

Piandao was really cool in that episode, and he briefly appeared again as a proper member of the White Lotus, which made him even more compelling. But like his ally Pakku, Piandao only appeared twice, and Avatar fans need more of him.

5 Monk Gyatso Needs More Guest Appearances

Aang’s old Air Nomad mentor, Monk Gyatso, had been a personal friend of Aang’s and a role model for the boy. He appeared in some flashbacks in the days leading up to Aang’s departure from the Southern Air Temple, and it became wonderfully clear why Aang looked up to him.

However, Monk Gyatso is long dead, and his appearances in flashbacks are limited. Avatar fans would love to see more of Gyatso and his teaching style or even see more scenes of him fighting off invading Fire Nation forces.

4 Hakoda Had Only A Few Scenes

Sokka and Katara’s widower father, Hakoda, is a true leader of men and a wonderful person. He was largely absent from Avatar: The Last Airbender until he appeared for the eclipse invasion of the Fire Nation, where he quickly lived up to his reputation as the commander of that amphibious assault.

Hakoda was captured and ended up in the ultra-secure Boiling Rock prison alongside Suki, but they didn’t give up hope. Later, Sokka and Zuko broke them out, but not much of Hakoda was seen after that. Hakoda is worth an entire OVA or short spinoff series detailing his war days.

3 Ursa Is Zuko’s Awesome Mother

Zuko’s kind mother, Ursa, was almost entirely absent in the original Avatar, appearing only in a few flashbacks and as a hallucination that Azula saw during the series’ climax. It’s a shame, since Ursa is one of the best mothers in the entire franchise, easily competing with the likes of Kya, Suyin Beifong, and Katara herself.

Ursa is craftier than most people in the Fire Nation give her credit for. She correctly saw Azula as a problem child rather than a prodigy to be fawned over, and she also taught Zuko some vital life lessons before she helped Ozai poison the brutal Fire Lord Azulon. Fans of Ursa are grateful that she at least appears in the Dark Horse comics.

2 Ty Lee Was The First Chi Blocker

Unlike characters such as Piandao and June, the acrobatic chi blocker Ty Lee appears plenty of times in Avatar: The Last Airbender, starting with her debut early in Book Two: Earth. But even so, passionate Avatar fans simply cannot get enough of this fun character and her cheerful ways.

Ty Lee was a villain in most episodes, but after Fire Lord Ozai’s downfall, Ty Lee redeemed herself at once and joined the Kyoshi Warriors as a friend. Avatar fans would love to see more of the redeemed Ty Lee having adventures with Suki, Aang, and her crush Sokka and see a new side to her.

1 Combustion Man Is So Mysterious

The firebender called Combustion Man is so mysterious that Avatar didn’t even reveal his real name. He was nicknamed Combustion Man instead, and fans know him by that name, too. Little else is known of him aside from his appearance and his unusual bending style, and not even the arrival of P’Li in The Legend of Korra provided much insight into his origin.

Combustion Man was little more than a boss battle for the Gaang to face, and he died without revealing any serious details about himself. If he appeared more often, fans might find out his real name, his origins, and all kinds of trivia on him.
