A top aide to former First Lady Jill Biden, Anthony Bernal, has refused to testify in a House-led investigation into the cover-up of former President Joe Biden’s cognitive decline after the White House waived his executive privilege.
In a post on Wednesday on X from the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, the Committee said that Bernal, the former assistant to the President and Senior Advisor to Jill, was “defying Congress” by not testifying.
“He’s running scared,” it added. “The cover-up is collapsing. We will subpoena him immediately.”

House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. James Comer (R-Ky) said in a statement that “Now that the White House has waived executive privilege, it’s abundantly clear that Anthony Bernal – Jill Biden’s so-called ‘work husband’ – never intended to be transparent about Joe Biden’s cognitive decline and the ensuing cover-up.”

“With no privilege left to hide behind, Mr. Bernal is now running scared, desperate to bury the truth,” he added. “The American people deserve answers and accountability, and the Oversight Committee will not tolerate this obstruction. I will promptly issue a subpoena to compel Anthony Bernal’s testimony before the Committee.”
As Comer noted, yesterday the Committee heard from ex-top aide to former President Joe Biden, Neera Tanden, who, under oath, admitted she had controlled Biden’s autopen for “nearly two years, but denied any manipulation or abuse, asserting that she was following a system established by previous administrations,” RedState reported.
“Ms. Tanden testified that she had minimal interaction with President Biden despite wielding tremendous authority,” Comer said. “She explained that to obtain approval for autopen signatures, she would send decision memos to members of the President’s inner circle and had no visibility of what occurred between sending the memo and receiving it back with approval.”

“Her testimony raises serious questions about who was really calling the shots in the Biden White House amid the President’s obvious decline,” he added. “We will continue to pursue the truth for the American people.”
Tanden shared in her testimony that “As staff secretary, I was responsible for handling the flow of documents to and from the president,” per the Washington Examiner. “I was also authorized to direct that autopen signatures be affixed to certain categories of documents.”
“We had a system for authorizing the use of the autopen that I inherited from prior administrations,” Tanden added. “We employed that system throughout my tenure as staff secretary.”
RedState’s Rusty Weiss noted that Tanden used the autopen from October 2021 to May 2023. He wrote that:
Tanden, at that time, replaced Susan Rice as the head of the Domestic Policy Council. She was succeeded by Annie Tomasini, who is expected to sit down for her own interview in the coming weeks.
At present, it is unclear whether Tomasini continued the system used by her predecessor to operate the autopen, the use of which had become increasingly worrisome based on Biden’s advancing cognitive decline.
Biden issued sweeping preemptive pardons to members of his family, while 37 individuals had death row sentences converted to life in prison in the waning days of his failed presidency.
