SIMON JONES: Saul, 26, has been on United’s radar for some time though his £128million buy out clause was an obvious obstacle. However, with Atletico under increasing financial strain, there is a growing belief a deal could be struck this window closer to £45m. United want a top level midfielder with Paris St Germain ready to make an offer for Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic, who figured against QPR on Saturday, weighing up his options. Saul is under contract until 2026 and is one of Atletico’s highest earners. He has been offered to Barcelona and Juventus in recent weeks, indeed talks had developed over a swap with Barca’s Antoine Griezmann only for wages to become an issue.

While focus has been concentrated on Kane’s relationship with chairman Daniel Levy, it’s understood that Lewis – whose net worth is £3.5billion – has been unimpressed with the way the England captain’s future has been discussed and is digging in his heels. Kane, who hasn’t won a major trophy in his career, said in an interview with Gary Neville in May, that his future was up to him, rather than the north London club.

There are things he still wants to say. Doubtless, they will include details of contracts and conversations. What was expected and what was offered. Why, after five years at Anfield, he left this summer after his contract expired. The fans, he believes, deserve to know. They may, for now at least, have to wait a bit longer for the full debrief. He talks about how he’s been made to feel loved at PSG, in their negotiations with him, in explaining the project under Mauricio Pochettino, a manager who tried to sign him for Tottenham while he was still a Newcastle player. It’s that love, he says, that he did not always feel towards the end of his time at Liverpool ‘from the other side’.
