Trump and Melania arrive at the Capitol for consequential State of the Union as over 70 Democrats boycott: Live updates

President Donald Trump will address the nation during his State of the Union speech from the US Capitol building tonight at 9pm ET.

Trump left the Capitol hand in hand with First Lady Melania on Tuesday night as he arrived to the  House Chamber.

The president previewed his highly-anticipated address during a traditional, off-the-record lunch with network news anchors today.

‘[Trump] said Iran wants a deal more than I do, but they just can’t say the magic words, which he said was that they won’t build a bomb,’ ABC News Chief Washington Correspondent Jonathan Karl said of the lunch.

He is expected to address his policies to supercharge the US economy as well as the president’s rewiring of global trade and tax cuts. At the same lunch, he told reporters that he would ‘advocate for a form of tax cuts, corporate and mostly personal.’

At least 70 Democrats will be boycotting Trump’s State of the Union by attending counterprogramming or protesting at the National Mall. Others have unleashed a sabotage plot to stage walk-outs during Trump’s speech as he prepares to reset his agenda.

Earlier, the president warned that his speech would be lengthy, and he is expected to boast about the economy, arguing that the country is ‘strong, prosperous and respected’ as it enters its 250th year. ‘It’s going to be a long speech because we have so much to talk about,’ the Trump said on Monday.

Dems boycotting Trump’s State of the Union

Dozens of Democrats will be boycotting Donald Trump’s State of the Union by attending counterprogramming.

Two counter-programming events are planned in Washington, DC. The ‘State of the Swamp’ will take place at 7pm at the National Press Club, with lawmakers and media stars scheduled to speak, and activists encouraged to wear swampy frog costumes.

A second event, the ‘People’s State of the Union,’ will start at 8pm on the National Mall, including Trump nemesis Adam ‘Shifty’ Schiff of California.

Representative Katherine Clark, the House Democratic whip, said she will skip the State of the Union address and instead attend an alternative event.

‘Rather than listen to Donald Trump lie to the American people, I will be hearing from the people of my district about their personal experiences with skyrocketing costs, new barriers to health care, dismantled Social Security services, and brutal cuts to medical research,’ she said in a statement.

Conservative Justices John Roberts, the chief justice, as well as Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Comey Barrett are in the audience.

The lone liberal justice to attend is Elena Kagan.

Kavanaugh and Comey Barrett were both nominated by Trump to the bench. His third appointee Neil Gorsuch did not attend, and neither did Clarence Thomas or Samual Alito.

John Fetterman ditches sweatshirt for a suit in rare moment of decorum

Senator John Fetterman wore a suit to Donald Trump’s State of the Union on Tuesday.

It’s a rare moment that the Democratic from Pennsylvania decided to ditch his basketball shorts and sweatshirt.

The casual attire has become Fetterman’s signature look. He wears it in the halls of Congress and even dons the outfit – sometimes with large branding – during congressional hearings.

While coming into the chamber, Fetterman shook hands with Republican Representative Tim Burchett.

Barron Trump makes intriguing fashion choice in shock appearance on dad’s big night

Barron Trump has appeared alongside his siblings at the White House ahead of his father’s State of the Union address.

The President’s youngest will be sporting a blue tie instead of the traditional MAGA red tie worn by other members of his family.

Trump and his top advisers, including White House chief of staff Susie Wiles, will all be wearing red.

Barron, 19, is a sophomore at New York University who, unlike this father, mostly avoids the spotlight.

The young Trump, however, is facing the cameras tonight to support his father along with his older siblings, Ivanka, Don Jr, Eric, and Tiffany.

A photo of the siblings together at the White House was posted to social media shortly before their departure to the Capitol building.
