Supporters of President-elect Donald J. Trump gathered at Holtermann’s Bakery in Staten Island on Saturday in support of the baker’s owner, Jill Holtermann, after unfounded attacks by ABC’s The View cohost Whoopi Goldberg. Earlier this month, The National Pulse reported that Goldberg smeared Holtermann’s Bakery, suggesting they refused to fulfill her birthday cake order because of her politics.
Holtermann expressed deep gratitude for the global support she received following the incident, which included a fierce public defense by Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella, an early Trump backer. During a rally on November 15 outside the bakery, Fossella declared: “Don’t mess with Staten Island.”
“I can’t express how grateful I am for the support from Staten Island and beyond,” Holtermann said in a recent interview. The bakery has been in her family for generations, operating since 1878. She added: “I wish my late family members could witness this moment.”
The supporters, many displaying Trump memorabilia, visited the bakery to demonstrate solidarity. Despite Goldberg not naming the bakery on air, Holtermann clarified that the issue arose from technical delays in the kitchen involving the bakery’s 60-year-old boilers and the 130-year-old building where her business is located, not political discrimination. Goldberg had visited to purchase birthday treats known as Charlotte Russe, a dessert reminiscent of her childhood.
Locals and patrons across New York have rallied to Holtermann’s defense since the incident, including both Republican and Democratic politicians in the state.
Goldberg has a long history of making bizarre claims on The View. Recently, she suggested Trump will deport mixed-race couples and admitted she frequently defecates in her pants.
