 Two polar bears have attacked and killed a worker at a remote Canadian radar site.

The tragedy took place last Thursday on Brevoort Island, Nunavut.

The employee was working for the Nasittuq Corporation, which confirmed the death in statement.

The attack claimed the life of the worker, who has not been publicly identified, as well as one of the animals which had to be put down.

The incident is the second fatal polar bear attack in the last year.

 ‘Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, and colleagues affected by this loss,’ the company said in a statement.

‘Nasittuq Corporation is providing support to the family of the deceased during this difficult time. Additionally, we are offering counseling services to all employees affected by this.

‘The safety and well-being of our employees is our highest priority, and we are deeply committed to ensuring a safe working environment. 

‘We are working closely with local authorities and regulatory agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident.’

The Arctic outpost where the attack happened is one of dozens of North Warning System sites spanning 3,100 miles from Alaska to Canada.

The outposts form a network of surveillance stations against  aircraft incursions or missile attacks.

Polar bear attack on humans are rare, but have previously resulted in fatalities.

In January 2023, Summer Myomick, 24, and her one-year-old son, Clyde Ongtowasruk were killed in Wales, Alaska, by a marauding bear that was eventually shot dead by a local. 

The attack was the first fatal polar bear encounter in the state for 30 years

Polar bears live in Arctic regions across Canada, Alaska, Russia, Greenland and Norway.
