Congressman Thomas Massie Proposes Amendment To Defund Federal Mandate For ‘Kill Switch’ In New Vehicles
“This week the House will vote on my amendment to defund the federal mandate that requires all new vehicles be equipped with a kill switch to monitor driver performance and prevent vehicle operation,” Massie said Monday.

The ‘kill switch’ was included under the guise of preventing “alcohol-impaired driving fatalities.”
SEC. 24220. ADVANCED IMPAIRED DRIVING TECHNOLOGY states “to ensure the prevention of alcohol-impaired driving fatalities, advanced drunk and impaired driving prevention technology must be standard equipment in all new passenger motor vehicles.”
From the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act:
“If it passes, my ‘kill switch’ amendment will defund the looming mandate that all new vehicles sold after 2026 be equipped with technology that can automatically disable vehicles,” Massie added.
“Section 24220 of the infrastructure, investment, and jobs act requires all newly manufactured vehicles to be equipped with technology to monitor your performance while driving and to prevent vehicle operation if the car so determines that you are not doing a very good job of driving,” Massie previously said.
“Allowing the car to disable itself I think is troublesome. We don’t have a lot of time. This is supposed to be implemented in 2026. And I don’t know about you all, but I would like to know when I put my family in the car and I’m taking a trip somewhere, the car is not going to disqualify me,” he noted.

Massie said the House of Representatives debated on his amendment Tuesday night.

The Kentucky Republican said the amendment failed to pass.
“During debate last night on my amendment to defund the 2026 kill-switch mandate for cars, some Democrats claimed the technology wouldn’t monitor or disable cars. Here’s the actual law I had to read to them,” Massie said.
“My amendment failed,” he added.
Massie included the roll call vote.

“The right to travel is fundamental, but the government has mandated a kill-switch in new vehicles sold after 2026. The kill-switch will monitor driver performance and disable cars based on the information gathered. We will vote on my amendment to defund this mandate tonight,” Massie said.

The amendment failed 229-201, according to the roll call vote.
199 Republicans and 2 Democrats voted to pass the amendment.
The two Democrats who supported the amendment were Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA).
210 Democrats and 19 Republicans voted against the amendment.
