Update on ISIS Plot in NYC Seems to Seriously Contradict Claim by Suspected Would-Be Terrorists' Lawyer – RedState

Since Saturday, RedState has been keeping tabs on the thwarted allegedly ISIS-connected bombing attempt near the residence of the mayor, Gracie Mansion, in New York City, where two teenage, would-be terrorists “ignited and deployed” an IED (improvised explosive device). And as my colleague Sister Toldjah wrote just Wednesday that Mayor Zohran Mamdani flailed in his initial try at responding like a serious leader to what could have been the latest tragic situation in the Big Apple; her story also helpfully gives some background:

Two suspects on the pro-Mamdani side, Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi, were taken into custody after allegedly trying to commit what DOJ Attorney General Pam Bondi called an “ISIS-inspired attack of terrorism” against those protesting Mamdani. The New York City mayor’s immediate responses were to condemn… white supremacy rather than Islamism, the latter of which is alleged to be the motivation behind the IED attacks.

You might want to buckle up because there are several different parts to the update to the story on Thursday.

One of them, though, from our friend Fox News’ Bill Melugin, seems to seriously contradict what could be an important assertion by the suspected would-be terrorists’ lawyer: that they did not know each other. Melugin begins somewhat cheekily in an X post:

I hope you’re sitting down, but it turns out that the Pennsylvania teens that didn’t know each other and stumbled their way into an ISIS style terrorist attack in New York City not only knew each other, but plotted other attacks as well.

The notebook and other evidence suggested Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi had been planning some kind of an attack for at least a week

In the video reporting by Phil Taitt of NY’s Eyewitness News, the reporter also says there appears to be documentation officials found showing coordination and planning by the pair, with them considering other targets (“soft targets such as shopping centers”), then finally chose Gracie Mansion. These were outlined, reportedly, in a notebook which was discovered while searching a storage unit in Bucks County, PA. But authorities did not find specific stores or other details listed on those secondary plans. They did learn that this pre-planning for the Saturday attack happened “for more than a week.”

The investigators also searched electronic devices.

Lastly, there’s an update on the hero law enforcement officials, who put their lives in danger on Saturday, not knowing what the nature of the attack was in the early seconds. They told the media there was “no time to think” in the midst of the protest/counterprotest outside the mayor’s home. “The two saw the suspects holding bombs, and went after them,” Taitt said. Then, as he noted, the explosives did not go off, and the men were arrested.

The investigation of the newly-found documents and other materials in the storage area, according to the report, remains ongoing.

This is a developing story. RedState will provide updates as events warrant.
