One would expect a jazz festival to be a peaceful, joyous celebration of great music, maybe some great food, and some adult beverages for those old enough to partake. That’s what you would have expected, anyway, before the current, ongoing disintegration of our major cities. This time it’s Cincinnati, where what appears to be a middle-aged white couple were attacked and savagely beaten by a “teen mob.”
As it happens, there’s more to it than appears at first glance, although the legacy media isn’t reporting this.

At first look, this appeared to be a racially motivated hate crime. And, to be fair, in the first round of videos, we don’t see the moments leading up to the attack.
Senator Bernie Moreno (R-OH) had some sharp words for the Mayor of Cincinnati:
The Mayor of Cincinnati, @AftabPureval, who has an opinion on lots of irrelevant topics, has not issued a statement, let alone a condemnation, of this heinous attack.

Assistant United States Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon also took to X:
Our federal hate crimes laws apply to ALL Americans. We @CivilRights will monitor closely how local authorities handle this attack.
Nobody in our great nation should be the victim of such a crime, and where race is a motivation, federal law may apply. https://t.co/QeADELQMsZ

Now, though, it’s not clear that race was the factor that it may have appeared to be in the first video. Some new information has come to light that puts a different slant on this event. Note that the woman who was attacked is lying inert on the pavement, eyes open and staring; this is the sign of a concussion, possibly serious, although later in the video, she is seen being assisted to her feet by a black man. That after the man who was beaten appeared to throw the first blow – an open-handed slap, but the first blow nonetheless.

Police report that the incident started with a “verbal altercation” between two men on the scene.
As noted, these things are not always what they seem on the surface. Still, the response seems disproportionate in reply to an open-handed slap, but again, we don’t know all the details yet.
We do know that the Mayor of Cincinnati has, so far, issued no public statement. Mayor Aftab Preval has not posted to his X account since Saturday, when he placed this message:

The Cincinnati Police Department issued this statement, however:
On Saturday, Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge condemned the perpetrators of the attack and said CPD is actively working to hold them accountable in a statement provided to WLWT.
“I am in complete disgust waking up to the viral video many of you have now seen,” said Theetge. “The behavior displayed is nothing short of cruel and absolutely unacceptable. Our investigative team is working diligently to identify every individual involved in causing harm. It’s also important to clarify: this was a sudden dispute between individuals following a verbal altercation. It was not connected in any way to the Music Fest. If you have any information related to this incident, please contact Crime Stoppers immediately at 513-352-3042.”
Several, but not all, of the subjects involved have been identified by police.

This would appear to be one of those cases where a degree of calm is required; this incident may not be what it appeared to be at first glance.
Even so, if you were planning a visit to Cincinnati this summer, you may want to rethink those plans.
