Netflix is arguably the most popular streamings service out there today, and many people are probably more than curious to know who or what owns the streaming network that gives Netflix Life so many shows and movies to cover?

Netflix was founded in 2007 in Scott’s Valley, California. Initially, their entire deal was a mail-based movie rental system that The New York Times reported mailed roughly around 190,000 discs per day to 670,000 excited monthly subscribers.

Then in 2007, Netflix made the move into the world of streaming. Soon enough, they would become one of the biggest names in the entertainment industry. Every year they have an impressive showing at major awards showcases like the Emmys, Golden Globes, and Oscars.

In addition, it was reported in October 2020 that the streamer had 73 million paid subscriptions in the United States and over 195 million subscribers around the globe. They are considered to be the largest entertainment/media company by market capitalization and are ranked 164th on the Fortune 500. All in all, Netflix has really outdone all expectations, and it would be ideal to know who is on the streaming powerhouse’s illustrious throne.

Who owns Netflix?

It’s known that Disney owns Hulu and Disney+. Warner-Media owns Discovery+ and HBO Max. Apple owns Apple TV, Paramount owns Parmount+, and so on. But who runs the Netflix kingdom?

The answer is there is no individual owner or parent company for Netflix. Instead, the streamer is a publicly-traded company with many shareholders. This means the level of ownership varies from each individual or institutional shareholder.

As of writing this, The Vanguard Group, Inc. has the highest stake at 7.2%. As far as individual shareholders go, an example would be Reed Hastings, who owns about 1% of the company’s stock.

Who is Reed Hastings?

Hastings is the co-founder, chairman, and co-chief executive officer or CEO of Netflix. He sold his first business, called Pure Software, in 1995, which allowed him to co-found the streaming service with Marc Randolph in 1997.

Besides being a prominent stakeholder in the streaming service, Hastings has many other interests, including being very active in politics as well as educational philanthropy. He also co-authored the New York Times Bestseller with Erin Myers called No Rules Rules: Netflix and the Culture of Reinvention.

In the process of virtually annihilating the in-store movie rental business as well as making a serious dent in the cable television industry, Hastings has attained a net worth of $5.2 billion from Netflix.
